Want to buy games off Steam but don't have a credit card or PayPal account? With a new initiative from GameStop, you'll be able to use cash and store credit to fund your next purchase on Steam.

Prepaid "Steam Wallet" cards are now available at all US GameStop locations. They will be available in $20 and $50 denominations.

"This gives even more options to customers now that they can put money in their Steam Wallet using cash, gift cards or trade credits through our convenient neighborhood locations," GameStop's Steve Nix said in a press release. "Offering Steam Wallet codes at GameStop extends more options and convenience to gamers around to the world," Valve's Jason Holtman added.

Gamers will be able to trade in a game and use that store credit towards the purchase of Steam Wallet cards. In addition, PowerUp Rewards members will be able to accrue points for purchasing Steam credit.

Amazed that Gamestop were prepared to do this, or that Valve were that convincing. Surely it would result in less customers buying games in their own stores?

Show me a gamestop that sells PC games and I'll show you a time machine to circa 1999.

Though I basically agree with you, the Gamestop closest to me actually does stock a handful of PC titles.

They are already bleeding from PC digital sales, this is just letting them get in on a small cut

Most of their shoppers has to be traditional console games, I dont know any PC gamers that actually still order from B&M locations

Its either digital from steam (or direct like Blizzard) or free release day delivery with Amazon

Well it is sort of extra weird since they have a competing service in Impulse.

But I think I've figured it out - gamers want everything on Steam, but we also acknowledge that competition is good. The compromise: the other retailers (digital or retail) sell Steam games. Whether it's Steamworks-driven retail disc titles or Steam-redeemable keys, the other services can survive if they just come to accept that no one wants to run their DRM platform in addition to Steam.

According to joystiq.com it was GameStop manager Steve Nix who went to Valve.
