Lego Lord of the Rings game spotted on toys, at retail

Rumors of a Lego Lord of the Rings game are looking stronger, thanks to rumored packaging materials and the appearance of the game on a UK retailer.

Lego recently announced plans for Lord of the Rings brick-building sets, leading to a flurry of speculation that it would be next up for the Traveller's Tales video game treatment. Those rumors are getting another dose of fuel today, with reports of toy packaging advertising the game, and a listing for the game appearing on a UK retailer.

MCV reports that toy reviewers have gotten their hands on the LOTR Legos early, and have found packaging materials advertising the game. If that weren't enough, GameSpot reports that UK retailer Shop To put up a listing for the game. The listing has been pulled, but a cached version still shows it clearly.

The listing details the release date as October 26, 2012. That timing would make sense, since the Lord of the Rings franchise is going to get reinvigorated this year with a film adaptation of The Hobbit. It seems likely that Warner Bros will make an official announcement in the next few weeks, or during E3. Shacknews has contacted Warner Bros regarding the rumor, and will update as more information becomes available.

Traveller's Tales also has Lego Batman 2: DC Superheroes in the works for this year, so we might get a double-dose of Lego licensed games.

I can imagine a universe where the matrix trilogy was as good as the LOTR movies or the original Star Wars trilogy. A shame that it's not a universe we live in.

There's no competition between those movies. They all have their pros and weaknesses.

I would pay a large amount of cash for a set with Setzer's airship and mini-figs of the whole cast.

Lego LotR - when you consider Travellers Tales brand of humor they add - could be really good.

I mean, look at the promo art - to stay true to the Lego brand, the Ring is FUCKING HUGE (so that a mini-fig can hold it).

And then think about all the set pieces: Hobbiton, Moria, Helms Deep, Minas Tirith, and Mount Doom - they scream for Lego-izing.

i agree mate... it is wonderful that they are making it.. i for one love Travellers Tales Lego series of games.. their humour is slick and very visual... shone through in the Lego Batman game and also in Lego HP... it would be awesome if they can continue the same in to the LotR series too....
now i HAVE to set aside the money for the set pieces.. so frigging awesome !

The only thing I'm worried about is that the engine is going in a weird direction, to be hosent I only played the demo of the latest incarnations (Clone wars, Harry potter) but it was confusing with forced perspective and managing in game items, hell in clone wars I couldn't even figure out what to do with a crane or whatever it was, I might be stupid but damn I just had to stop playing because I couldn't figure it out. They really should go towards a full 3d engine with user camera control instead of the forced perspective.

The RTS parts of the clone wars were really bad also. I had a hell of a time finishing those the few times my kids needed my help so I have no idea how they expected young people to know wtf to do.

please fix your fucking engine first TTG. Falling through floors, broken achievements and clunky block building really bring down otherwise awesome games. I still haven't played Harry Potter 5-7 so maybe they've already fixed things, but considering there are issues which have been around since the original star wars games, I have my doubts. :(
