Rumor: Internet Explorer coming to Xbox 360

After six years on the market, is Microsoft ready to start playing catchup with the other consoles and offer an internet browser?

In spite of Microsoft having its own internet browser, the Xbox 360 is the only home console that does not feature an internet browser. The PS3 browser recently received a drastic update, and Opera on Wii has always been surprisingly reliable. Even the 3DS and Vita have internet browsers. After six years on the market, is Microsoft ready to start playing catchup?

According to The Verge--who correctly predicted Microsoft's plan for the $99 subsidized Xbox--Microsoft is currently testing "a modified version of Internet Explorer 9" for console use. Kinect support is deeply integrated into the experience, as is Bing voice search.

The report doesn't offer a launch date, but notes that Microsoft is likely to announce something by the time E3 rolls around next month.

I wonder what prompted them to decide to finally add console web browser after all this time. I am betting it has something to do with a kinect dashboard update.

I really doubt this will even support extensions/plugins or even flash. It might support silverlight considering that is a microsoft technology but even that is a stretch.

They wouldn't be able to sell the console w/o the option to install other browsers on start up.
