Indie X-COM 'em up Xenonauts is perhaps the closest we'll get to a straight remake of the classic turn-based tactics series, and now developer Goldhawk is now turning to Kickstarter for $50,000 to make it a little better. Unlike many Kickstarters, which simply tell you their idea and hope you're interested, this one's offering a demo so you can play the game before judging deciding whether to chip in.

The Xenonauts Kickstarter explains that the game will still be completed whether the goal is met or not, but would "be better and finished more quickly" with the funding. It's planning to bring its scattered staff together at a new office in London. Goldhawk's been accepting pre-orders for 18 months, but is hoping for an extra jolt of cash.

Pledging $20, the same amount that pre-ordering cost, will get you a Steam or Desura copy of Xenonauts when it launches, plus access to dev builds. For $100 you can get your name into the database of soldier names, or for $200 you can get your face in too.

The demo is really fun! not super polished, but really good all the same. I like that it looks like Theme Hospital crossed with the Sims with aliens and guns.

Not gonna lie, this worries me. I preordered this almost a year ago. The progress has been extremely slow but they boasted large amounts of preorders/indie funding. Now they want more money? I hope they're not having development issues.

I can't look at the kick starter page now but what are the incentives for backing? I'm going to be upset if I'm missing out on some goodies because I chose to support them when they first started. :(

You're not missing out, you get the same goodies as the Kickstarter backers. You can also add some money and get the T-shirt or whatever, your first contribution still counts.
The development goes slow because this is basically one guy, plus two others in distant parts of the world, plus some part timers from time to time. This funding is to get the guys together, so they are able to work on this game properly and speed up the development.

Wow, the funding goes really fast. 40% and it's still the first day??
I love the graphics of this game, especially all these sad faces on the static images, looking into the camera as if they know the gravity of the situation and know they are in big shit. I hope they polish the fuck out of this game thanks to Kickstarter. Finally, the long wait since X-COM: Apocalypse will be over.
