GameQ: the official magazine of GameFly launches on iPad
by Andrew Yoon, May 07, 2012 9:30am PDTGameFly Media, parent company of Shacknews, has launched a brand new digital magazine. Called GameQ, it is the "official magazine of GameFly"--and best of all, it's free.
Available now on the iPad, the interactive digital magazine combines exclusive articles with screenshots and videos, all in a sleek, easy-to-understand interface. Issue one covers Halo 4, Max Payne 3, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, and much more.
Initial reviews have been positive from iTunes users, with Philly RPG calling it "literally the best digital magazine I have ever seen!" However, some users point out the lack of Retina support for the new iPad, and the large issue file size (around 400MB).
While iPad owners are getting a first jump at the magazine, Android users need not feel left out. A version for Android tablets is also on the way.

-Vertical spacing on the "Now Reading" button is awkward as is the horizontal alignment
-The flip up and down action when you hit buttons like "Store" and "Now Reading" doesn't make any sense
-Hitting "Live" brings up a god damn window. Come on, who are you paying to do this? It's an iPad not a desktop.
-The default background is "How to Use". You can bring up another "How to Use" modal dialogue on top "How to Use". After you open up the magazine yet another god damn "How to Use" is there. When you need instructions that prevalent you've designed it wrong.
-The framed visual design used on "Share" and on "Live" is extremely dated
-Autohiding of the menu is inconsistent and shouldn't exist in the first place
-Store purchase button doesn't update after you've bought an issue. Why is there a separate Store and Library anyways? You only have a magazine that presumably will be updated with issues, unlike say iBooks where there are proliferate variety of books that you may or may not be interested in.
-The Downloading status is awkwardly aligned and doesn't properly reflect the time remaining until you can read since there's also a processing phase. You'll note that when you download and install an application on iOS and installing phase is part of the progress bar.
-Why does a modal dialog pop up after I'm done downloading?
-Why do you list "GameQ" beside the actual magazine cover? The application is called GameQ. The cover has a prominent GameQ on it. Why is there another "GameQ" on the bottom scroll? We know.
-Again, instructions in the Bookmarks drop down: if you need that many instructions you're doing it wrong. You'll note that iBooks bookmarks has a visual indicator and no instructions are needed at all.
-418.1MB? Are you serious? I get that most magazine (Condé Nast) on iPad are doing the images instead of live rendered bullshit, but the experience is generally fucking terrible.
-While the scroll bar indicating the length of each page is nice, it's completely useable as an actual scrollbar and flashes so quickly that it might as well not be there, especially since it's inconsistent with the actual page scrollbar on the bottom
-Stop autohiding things. Seriously.
-What does the flashing dot on the left indicate? Why even bother having it there.
-The swipe zones are broken on the "Beyond Gaming" page
-The final page scrolls horizontally, which is inconsistent and completely ignores your explanation of how you should scroll vertically to read articles
