Weekend Confirmed 111 - Elder Scrolls Online, Black Ops 2, God of War: Ascension
by Garnett Lee, May 04, 2012 11:00am PDTBlockbuster games headline this episode of Weekend Confirmed. Elder Scrolls Online, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, and God of War: Ascension alone could more than fill the show but there's more. Mike Schramm of TUAW and Joystiq helps the two Jeffs and Garnett bring the awesome needed to keep up with it all. The discussion of role-playing games also includes the recently released pirate-themed Risen 2. Sniper Elite V2 and a couple other things also make their way into the crowded mix before Finishing Moves puts the final exclamation point on the show.

But anyone with an intelligent mind will tell you that the original movies great movies and the prequels are below average movies.
The original trilogy is one huge rip off of Buck Rodgers, samurai films, westerns and medieval fantasies. But it's done with competence and it's tightly executed. The romances have chemistry and the drama is functional. He story is simple and fun. The characters are archetypes but suit the story well. They are good films.
The prequels are messy, lazy films with horrendous scripts, the stories are convoluted and dull. The acting yo yos from abysmal to admirable in parts. The special effects, like the original trilogy are breathtaking despite being a bit broken at times (each trilogy has it's broken bits). They are bad films.
The best measure is my kids, 5 and 7 years old. Having attempted to start them on the prequels with non stop action and funny characters like Jar Jar I found them losing interest. They couldn't watch an entire film. I think they can't find an entry point, a character or plot to latch onto. Having recently shown them A New Hope and Empire I was stunned at their fixation with the films. I swear during the entire opening scenes with R2 and C3PO and Tattooine and the Jawas, which there's little to no dialogue, they sat motionless, caught in the films tractor beam. I think it's the simplicity, Darth Vader is the baddy guy and Luke is the goodie, and the hero has to face him. When Obiwan allowed Darth to kill him on the Death Star my eldest son stood up and yellled 'WHY?!" Now they're building lego X wings and running around the yard being Luke Skywalker. It's simple, clean fun with well acted characters and a fun plot.
Also, Darth Maul. What an absolute waste of a character. He could have been the Darth for a new generation, with an image and personality etched into minds as strongly as Vader ever was. But alas, squandered.
