CCP gives blessing to EVE Online economy attack

CCP is allowing a large-scale, economy-wrecking campaign to go forward in EVE Online tomorrow, claiming that intervening would go against their game's principles.

You might think that after building a persistent world with its own complex infrastructure that has been active for 10 years, CCP would frown on players making an overt, planned attempt to wreck EVE Online's economy. You might think that, but you'd be wrong.

It's going to be "absolutely brilliant," senior producer Jon Lander said.

The "Burn Jita" action is scheduled to begin tomorrow, just as The Mittani (player Alexander Gianturco) has his ban lifted, reports Eurogamer. Gianturco was the head of the Council of Stellar Management, and recently endured a suspension for encouraging the community to grief a suicidal player. Some players have reportedly jumped the gun with skirmishes on the region, but 14,000 Thrasher ships are preparing for the Mittani's GoonSwarm assault.

So how does this impact the economy? Jita happens to be the central hub of the in-game economy. Players are nervous about what it may do to their virtual cash, but CCP has promised not to get involved -- other than swapping some servers to make sure Jita can handle the increased workload.

"They're going to do exactly what you're able to do in the game, and people will have to roll with it," said Lander. "The worst thing we could do is to stop it from happening. It would be appalling for the game. It would be against everything we stand for."

Lead game designer Kristoffer Touborg suggests that the move will cause short-term pain, but could actually be good in the long-term. By shaking up the ones who control the industrial power, they'll have to start from the bottom and new power players could emerge. He calls it a "healthy" move for the game.

"Do you want to play a 15-minute match of Call of Duty that you won't remember the next day, or do you want to spend four months manufacturing 14,000 Thrashers to do this?" Touborg said. "It's just so big and awesome."

It's all a virtual currency, but it's a complex economy nonetheless. You might call this an experiment with the extremely open market, so expect to see a few Thrasher ships named after Ron Paul.

It's the main market hub for game. There are other systems that have pretty decent markets overall but nothing comes close to the volume of trading that takes place in Jita.

if I understand though, it is an NPC owned system? Who is this really hurting?

They are destroying massive amounts of player wealth by blowing up transports full of expensive goods.

I don't think the system owner is the issue, but the impact of what essentially would become an all out war in the heart of Wall Street, imposing trade embargoes and killing stockbrokers on sight. The value of resources, if I understand supply and demand correctly, will get all kinds of fucked up and traders will have to move to other systems to do business.

Depending on how long it goes on they could lock a lot of resources up in the system.

It's meant to hurt everyone. Jita is the one stop shop for everything. It's like the supermarket of the universe. What they are doing is blowing up all the freighters trying to move goods in and out of there, sabotaging the market.

It does take time, but if you train right, you can get places and do things decently enough. Especially if you make some friends along the way and gang up. I've gotten into diving into Worm Holes and raking in the ISK. Find an empty one, a quiet one, or if you can't be arsed to scan for hours one that's occupied and burn anyone in your way, and make hundreds of millions of ISK in an evening flying a Drake and Osprey(easy to train ships). Just know that you will, eventually, get pod'd.

Rule 1 of Eve - Don't fly anything you can't afford to replace.

Concord doesn't concern itself with thieves. They just mark you as free game for whom you've stolen from.

He was banned last month. It was a crappy ban and he apologized. This is to change the status quo in the game up a bit. HS is too comfortable for a lot of players.

They've been planning on wreaking havoc on the markets since last year when they attacked ice mining, shooting the cost of fuel way up for those with Gallente player owned stations. Those stations also offer the most bang for your R&D buck so it hurt quite a bit.

I think that was them testing the waters for this.

This all seemed awesome till I read the article and it's all coming based on this asshole that was griefing a suicidal player. I'm assuming they mean real life suicidal, and he was basically trying to push him over the edge? Or am I getting this all wrong?

no, that sounds about right for goons. the idea of tragedy or any sort of seriousness (specifically the kind that is perceived as being some sort of self-inflicted or mock tragedy/seriousness) on the internet is so offensive to many them that they do their best to stamp it out via ridicule and harassment.

and to be fair the internet is a pretty poor venue for the kind of behavior they dislike.

This is honestly the coolest sounding thing I've heard happen in an MMO, and I think it's awesome the game devs are letting it flow. A group of people being responsible for a major universe altering event?

Super cool. I don't think any other MMO is capable of saying that any such thing has occurred within its gamespace.

The only thing remotely comparable is back when I used to play Silkroad Online, I remember going on some massive trade runs with a guild from a major town to another one, and having that feeling of seeing more advanced players with wicked cool mounts and having high level hunters guard you on a major silkroad trade endeavor.

It was great, but I don't think it's 10000 ships great. Have fun to everyone participates!

that one dude killed Lord British. In you UO could wipe out a town loot all the gold and in sa sense "spawn kill" newbies.

you could take over an entire town before they fixed it.
