Dive, Dive! Silent Hunter Online announced

It's been awhile since we've gotten a good naval simulation (without an online requirement, yeah, looking at you Silent Hunter 5), but Ubisoft is taking to the seas again with a new sub sim designed to be online with Silent Hunter Online.

While many naval gaming enthusiasts cut their teeth on the Silent Hunter series, I earned my naval rank through a not-as-popular game, Enigma: Rising Tide. I loved the sub combat, but eventually grew away from the genre, never fully adopting the SH games.

Now, I am probably going to get that submariner yearning again. After the "always-online" debacle that was Silent Hunter 5, Ubisoft is trying again, this time with a game that is supposed to stay connected. Silent Hunter Online was announced today as a Flash-oriented, browser-based game. It is being developed by Blue Byte, the studio behind the Settlers and Anno series of games.

The game world is dynamic, affected by what other players do in the game. Players can also group up in wolfpacks to hunt down enemy convoys.

Not much is know yet, but the game is in alpha and expected to launch later this year. Watch the teaser below, then you can enlist in the beta if you can stand the close quarters.

So when fans reject and despise always on internet enabled drm, the appropriate response is to just obliterate any concept/hope of offline single player. GG Ubisoft.

Next up Silent Hunterville for Facebook. or if we're lucky, bankruptcy

Gonna sign up for the beta to try it out, but would've been awesome if it was a true game, not a flash, with the realism options of SHIV (for those like myself who love realism), with the ability to walk around the sub and interact a bit with the crew and graphics from SHV, but with the interactive world of an MMO.

This franchise has always relied on the mod community to make their games playable, how is that going to work with this?

Yeah but it holds up well, esp with the TMO mod.

They need to let it die. They've already pissed off everyone who would be interested in this.
