The free weekend kicks off at 10am Pacific on Thursday, the announcement notes. If you've got Steam installed, click this thing to start pre-loading MW3's multiplayer. There's no mention of when the weekend will be considered over, but the last one also began at 10am on Thursday and that ended at 1pm on Sunday.
The new CoD's initial teaser image lead to speculations that it'll be a sequel to Cold War 'em up Call of Duty: Black Ops, though a cheeky bit of viral marketing featuring a gun-packing drone suggests something near-future. The series has traditionally alternated between past and present-ish settings, with Treyarch handling the former and Infinity Ward the latter. It's Treyarch's turn to lead this year, but the popular speculation's that they'll bring us near-future special ops shenanigans.
