Weekend Confirmed 109 - Prey 2, Trials Evolution, Fez, God of War: Ascension

by Garnett Lee, Apr 20, 2012 11:00am PDT

There's no two ways around it, the run to E3 has started. Big news leads off this episode of Weekend Confirmed with Sony announcing a new God of War game in the works for PlayStation 3. One of last year's E3 surprises, Prey 2, also finds its way into the news with word of a delay as rumors swirl around its development. Screen Tear host Carlos Rodela joins the two Jeff's and Garnett as they tackles these stories along with more love for Fez and plenty of enthusiasm for the finger-melting action of Trials Evolution. There's even some board game love worked in there before Finishing Moves brings it all home.

  • Looking forward to hearing Jeff C rant about Prototype 2 this week. :P

I'm enjoying it for what it is, an open-world game that uses that format to increase the scale of the mayhem and little else. The combat system is still actually pretty good for a game of this type, with lots of powers and 'weapons' to choose from, each effective at it's own thing. Combined with the ease of maneuvering through the city, and taking hold of vehicles, things get wonderfully out-of-control quickly, and it's a great guilty pleasure.

So basically it's a game that has no variety - because it basically just asks you to do one thing: KILL. BUT, at the same time it's a game with TONS of variety, because the game offers you so many different tools to go about it.

...but it is a little immature in how it revels in it's own violence, gore and forced 'badass' vibe. The first game had a cool, creepy mood with an oppressive government making inroads, conspiracies behind everything, and a main character that whose search for the truth only unearthed discoveries that drove him further along a spiral of sociopathy.

This game is just a bloody revenge tale in a mutant warzone. Less interesting IMO.
