Sometimes, accidents are bad. Like when you're on stage, trying to figure out "dyslexic" during the 6th grade spelling bee, and you forgot to go wee wee beforehand. But sometimes, accidents can be good. Super Monday Night Combat's release onto Steam is just that.

Now available on Steam, SMNC is a free-to-play sequel of Uber Entertainment's popular third-person shooter.

Called a "premature distribution" by Uber's Chandana Ekanayake, the game was accidentally released on Steam due to some "wonkiness" surrounding the game's invite system. "There will be a formal announcement, promotion, etc coming soon with the next patch," Ekanayake said on the game's official forums. "Really the way we see it, it's no different that what we've been doing, which is continue to update the game."

As a free-to-play game built for PC, Uber Entertainment had already planned on offering frequent updates to the game. That system will be put to the test with this accidental early release, which still features "bugs and exploits" according to some in the community.

"F-ck it, we're doing it live," Ekanayake said in one fiery tweet.

Well. Certainly brave of them to launch without any tutorial at all - against the advice of basically everyone on the beta forums.

For those who haven't been exposed to this, it's very much worth mentioning that SMNC is 3rd-person DOTA. It is -not- anywhere near the level of arcadey that the original was. You can and will get your team stomped if you run out and die repeatedly.

If you've never played a dota-style game before I highly recommend looking for some tutorials on the forums, because you will have a miserable time otherwise. It's a great game, but the learning curve is definitely there for people who come in not knowing what to expect.

This game felt identical to the original, except for the new characters had a completely different feel and jarring dichotomy between them and the old ones. Was I missing something?

It must have been a long time since you played the original if you thought it was -identical-. The characters' HP has been multiplied by about 10, resulting in a much slower-paced game. Turrets are prebuilt and can't be rebuilt, and do significantly more damage than in the past. Kills reward significantly more exp, and there are now two tiers of passives rather than one, making leveling even more important.

The game has similarities but the strategies of "run around mowing down enemy players solo" that won the day in MNC just don't function anymore.

That doesn't sound like a very fun shooter at all.

It's really not a shooter, not in the traditional sense. It's third-person DOTA with jumping and aiming. Whether that is your cup of tea is up to the player.

I do find it kind of weird that they've apparently done so little to get that fact out there.

It's not, I liked the original a lot more. There's enough DoTA style games, I wish they kept building on what people liked about MNC.

I think they did. They took an overly hectic game and slowed the gameplay down just a tiny bit. Now there seems to be much funner gun play happening and lots more strategy.
If everyone would give it a shot you'd see it's a much deeper experience.

I agree with Mecha, I liked the frantic pace a lot better. Found the new one to be slower, and not in a good way. That being said, I have always been a Quake 3 fan, and am loving the new Tribes game as well...so I guess that's perspective.

Try thinking of it more like DOTA or LoL and you'll get a better sense of how the game flows. You kind of have to adjust your expectations a bit - it's not MNC anymore, not really.

DOTA / LoL refer to Defense of the Ancients / League of Legends, respectively. It's a gameplay style that originated with warcraft 3 mods and emphasizes positioning and strategy, as well as harshly punishing player death. It's hard on newbies but has a fair amount of depth to it.

This game takes that style of play and adds third-person shooting in. The best way to think of it is a slow-paced, tactical team arena shooter with RPG elements.

It's a different game. The rules have changed so to speak. We've also gone from 6 classes to 15. It's a little less twitchy and a little more strategic. I'm lead twitch player in the office and consistently dominate so I don't think you'll be too disappointed. It's definitely a different experience but it's one I think you'll enjoy.

I wanted to like it but I always felt like I was going 0 damage while everyone else was doing mega damage. Also the grapple system needs some work. Playing an assassin and running up behind someone missing 3 or 4 grapples point blank is annoying as fuck.

What classes did you try? I can sympathise with the 0 damage thing if you were playing an assault - they are a lot tricker to play than they used to be. Enforcers are much better for beginners.

I played long enough to play all classes a few times. Missing point blank grapples on people was infuriating.

Seems pretty fun so far... I think the slower pace agrees with me much more than MNC's pretty hectic one. It's kinda nice having a chance to fight back before dying. :P

Leavers are a real problem though... I've played ~10 games so far, and there have been leavers in each of them except a couple... game I just got out of it wound up being 2v5 after a few minutes. :\

I was on the 2 side, and we got steamrolled pretty good... not fun at all, and I can't imagine it being all that fun on the other side either. I don't know how they'd fix that, but I hope they're doing something about it.
