Super Mario 4 domain registered by Nintendo

Although Super Mario 3D Land came out just months ago, it appears Nintendo may be readying to announce (and promote) a brand new Mario game.

Nintendo promised yet another entry to their flagship Mario series earlier this year. Describing it is as a brand new 2D game for 3DS, we reported that it should be similar to the New Super Mario Bros. series.

Although Super Mario 3D Land came out just months ago, it appears Nintendo may be readying to announce (and promote) a brand new Mario game--at least based on a new domain name registration filed by the publisher.

An IGN reader spotted "supermario4.com," which was registered on April 3rd. The URL is currently active, redirecting users to the official Nintendo website.

Super Mario 4 would be an odd name for a new Mario game, given Super Mario World was initially dubbed Super Mario Bros. 4 (at least in Japan). Of course, New Super Mario Bros did sort of press Nintendo's hand--they couldn't call this upcoming game Even Newer Super Mario Bros, could they?

Release it like mega man 9 and 10 old school graphics, well, maybe snes graphics, and I'm all over it.

Haven't liked what they've done to Mario these yrs, except Mario 64 was pretty fun.

I swear when I was a kid I saw in a magazine a screenshot from the yet-to-be-released Super Mario World on the yet-to-be-released SNES that was the title screen and the title was:

Super Mario Bros. 4: Super Mario World

And then being disappointed when they dropped the SMB4 title.

I have never ever seen this screenshot again and I can't find it so either it was very elusive or I imagined it.

Still, they should have called NSMB SMB4 instead. And this would be SMB5 they're working on now.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that this is their big fall game for 3ds. Though if that is the case, they won't be launching NSMB Mii ( the Wii U tech demo from last year) on the Wii U. You want your top tier level designers on something that you're calling the 4th Super Mario game and having another similar product launching for the Wii U would do a disservice to both games.
