In response to deafening complaining from the Internet, Mass Effect 3 will receive an updated ending. The free Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut DLC won't outright change what happens, but will expand upon it, showing more of what's going on.

"Through additional cinematic sequences and epilogue scenes, the Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut will give fans seeking further clarity to the ending of Mass Effect 3 deeper insights into how their personal journey concludes," EA explains in the announcement.

BioWare GM Raz Muzyka said, "Since launch, we have had time to listen to the feedback from our most passionate fans and we are responding. With the Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut we think we have struck a good balance in delivering the answers players are looking for while maintaining the team's artistic vision for the end of this story arc in the Mass Effect universe."

Mass Effect executive producer Casey Hudson added, "We have re-prioritized our post-launch development efforts to provide the fans who want more closure with even more context and clarity to the ending of the game, in a way that will feel more personalized for each player."

Certain corners of the Internet erupted in fury after they played through Mass Effect 3's ending, or watched it on YouTube, or heard from a friend. This manifested in countless forum posts, a flood of whining reviews on Amazon and other stores, and even someone filing complaints with the Federal Trade Commission and Better Business Bureau. In a way, it's all an unusual compliment to BioWare on creating a series fans care so passionately about.

Following rumours, BioWare confirmed last month that it planned to release new content clarifying and offering closure.

The Extended Cut will be available for free on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this summer.

There are a few things in the ending that make zero sense but could make slightly more sense with expanded cinematics(which will probably be bullshit). Otherwise though the ending will still be terrible unless it's rewritten from scratch.

Expanded info can't save this ending. None of the choices presented were choices I actually wanted to make or that would make sense for the Shepard I was playing.. what would have been for more interesting would be to see how the Galaxy has changed after the reapers and the choices I made beforehand, and not to have everything I've done be completely pointless.

I think that they needed a 4th "I reject the entire premise of your argument " option. It would end horribly or well depending if you had made choices throughout the series that backed up your counter argument. But that would ruin their "artistic vision"

        • reply
          April 5, 2012 9:15 AM

Yeah but I wonder whose artistic vision it would ruin? I was reading that one of the writers was complaining that the ending was written by only 2 people (lead writer and the producer), whereas the rest of the game was under peer review by all their writers. So while I think artistic vision is important, I would hazard a guess that this particular vision wasn't a popular one even by the developers themselves..

Fine, so now if you blew up the reactor or whatever, they find Shepard, maybe even Anderson, and revive him, and now Anderson Garrus and Shepard are last seen chilling out on the beach with a half-submerged Reaper Hull twinkling in the distance. If you took the "my face burned off and I disintigrated shortly thereafter" endings, then it'll either be the ending from Lawnmower Man or possibly Scanners, depending on whether they want you to have a corporeal body.

This is unlikely considering that there is no evidence of this from Bioware, and the Indoctrination idea was shot down in Geoff Keighley's Final Hours.

Also in the FAQ released today they stated the endings aren't changing just having epilogues added. So unless Shepard wakes up from the dream and then immediately goes and does the exact same choice they can't accomplish this.

I liked the game a lot. I wouldn't say the dialogue was good though. Most of it was extremely generic soldier talk that almost made me want to laugh half the time. The romantic shit was absolutely terrible as well.

There was the occasional spurt of good dialogue out of some of the side characters but it was pretty overwhelmed by the shittiness of all the rest.

Go play Heroes of Might and Magic 5, then play Mass Effect 3.

Go play Risen, then play Mass Effect 3.

I'm assuming they're just going to add
      - more space battle cinematics
      - scenes showing what happened to your squad and crew afterwards
      - possibly some scenes showing what your other squadmates were doing in the final assault
      - the extent of the damage to everyone in the solar system caused by the relays blowing up (if any)

or at least, i hope so.

I know I'm in the minority, but this is a bit disappointing. Don't get me wrong, I'm always down for more content. Especially if it's for a game I really enjoyed playing, but this whole situation is beyond the beyond. I finished ME3, and while the ending may have left me with some questions, I didn't feel like I lost anything because of it. This feels very reminiscent of when I see kids throw a temper tantrum and the parents just give them the cookie to make them stop. The unfortunate thing to come out of this will be that some gamers will know that from now on, if they yell, kick, and scream loud enough, developers may be more inclined to give them a cookie. But, then again, you never know what could come out of this after the "extended" release. I mean, adding content retroactively has worked well for the movie industry as a whole, so maybe this is the future after all.

If I had to guess it is either that EA is such a big company that they have an easier time trying to get free DLC, or perhaps that Valve wanted to ONLY release free dlc, whereas this will probably be the only free dlc that ME3 gets.

Plus they have the whole microtransactions in ME3, so I'd guess that would make up the lost sales from this free dlc.

Well, if you got half a brain (you obviously don't) you can see from the first time you meet Harbringer in the child form that Sheps' indoctrinated. If you have read the books it's really obvious. You even get to see the same trees as in the dreams, when you run for the Crucible. That's not true. The full quote from The Final Hours of Mass Effect 3 is, "And even in November the gameplay team was still experimenting with an endgame sequence where players would suddenly lose control of Shepard's movements and fall under full Reaper control. (This sequence was ultimately dropped because the gameplay mechanic proved too troublesome to implement alongside dialogue choices.)"

The gameplay was changed, the story was not. The truth about the finale is that Shepard is fighting indoctrination. What that means in regards to the Crucible, the Reaper threat, and galactic civilization is anyone's guess. We won't know until this DLC comes out.

Curious how they can pull this off as they pretty much need to remove key parts of the current cinematics to even begin to make any sense

If ME3 had delivered a dynamic ending like that it would take 2012 GOTY easily and develop a cult following even more persistent than Baldur's Gate or KOTOR, lasting well into the next generation. ME would have become the new standard for story based RPGs.

That was hilarious when I was walking around Normandy before the final mission and decided to drop by and see Garrus. The airlock doors slide open to reveal him and Tali starting to exchange air through the emergency orifice. They backed off and tried explaining themselves. I just stood there and laughed in my head. Never uttering a word. Then I walked away.

Both links are great but that build your own ME3 ending was especially excellent although it does serve to remind me just how poor the real ending was and how badly Bioware's writers screwed up. They should be ashamed for ruining such a great series right at the finish line and I don't think any extended cutscenes will help them. They won't be able to wash away this stain on their reputation until they deliver and finish out another story driven game that's at the quality level of KOTOR or ME1 and ME2. Dragon Age 3 isn't going to help them so I think the shadow of ME3 is going to hang over the Bioware brand for a while.

I really don't have high hopes for this. Simply trying to further explain things isn't going to solve the major issues with the ending. They should have just stuck to their guns and let it blow over. My guess is that they can't outright change the direction they've started on because future games depend on the foundation they're laying out.

Honestly, I really think the only major inexcusably bad part of the ending is all the nonsense with the Normandy. It just doesn't make any goddamn sense at all. The rest, even the silly colors and catalyst shit, while not at all the narrative direction that fits the series, at least is coherent.

            April 5, 2012 2:08 PM

While they could always decide that, I don't see why it wouldn't be, after all the it's not like the scene is from Shepherd's perspective. It's one thing to go with indoctrination or dream theories when talking about the experience on the Citadel and with the Catalyst...but once we're no longer seeing things from his/her perspective, claiming that everything they showed us wasn't real is a pretty huge cop out.

I agree. It surprises me that no-one said "hey guys, where the fuck did the Normandy go?" when they were writing this. Although, if that post about how Casey Hudson (I think) wrote the ending by himself and didn't offer it up for review is true, it'd definitely explain what was going on.

regardless of whether it was intended or not, they would be fools not to adopt the indoctrination theory and extend the ending based on that.

Wow Alice, throwing countless jabs at your audience whilst informing them at the same time: is that a journalistic technique or do I need further clarity of your artistic vision of this article? From the way you describe it and the the majority of posts on Shacknews, to say "corners of the internet" were unhappy with the product they purchased is to understate it just a bit.

Fair enough. Suffice it to say that there are those of us that believe that the ending was not what was promised to us and that voiced their opinions and displeasure with their purchase to Bioware without complaining. I don't know if you feel that those that are unhappy with the ending have some legitimacy to their argument but if so, it feels a bit unfair to lump us in with those who'd complain no matter what. And sorry for the sarcasm in my earlier post.

The ending is beyond terrible and needs to be completely redone. The god child machine should never have been introduced, especially since his existence makes the first Mass Effect game's plot nonsensical. The mass relays should be intact,. Since if they're not, all of our choices in the previous games are made meaningless. Those are the two major things that need to be addressed, before we can get to a few epilogues explaining what happens after Shepherd dies. There are other things that just don't make sense, like the IM managing to get onto the Citadel, and old man Anderson making it while no one else in the entire assault force, including your teammates, is able to.

The first Mass Effects plot? Eh. It makes all of them nonsensical. Why would TIM have to warn the Reapers that the Citadel is the Catalyst if the Catalyst is controlling the Reapers? Sovereigns dialogs are also stupid in ME1 if all they wanted to do was save organics from synthetics.

If the 30 or so plotholes that are introducted at the end are real, then BioWare really screwed up this time. But I doubt that. We'll see.

This is exactly the right choice. I thought the ending was emotional, impactful, and overall very well written and well done like the rest of the game. BUT yes it could use more added to the end to explain things further and bring closure. I think rather than creating a sad empty feeling, this change would make it a bit more triumphant. Hopefully it will deliver.
