Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut will be free, coming this summer
by Alice O'Connor, Apr 05, 2012 6:18am PDTIn response to deafening complaining from the Internet, Mass Effect 3 will receive an updated ending. The free Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut DLC won't outright change what happens, but will expand upon it, showing more of what's going on.
"Through additional cinematic sequences and epilogue scenes, the Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut will give fans seeking further clarity to the ending of Mass Effect 3 deeper insights into how their personal journey concludes," EA explains in the announcement.
BioWare GM Raz Muzyka said, "Since launch, we have had time to listen to the feedback from our most passionate fans and we are responding. With the Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut we think we have struck a good balance in delivering the answers players are looking for while maintaining the team's artistic vision for the end of this story arc in the Mass Effect universe."
Mass Effect executive producer Casey Hudson added, "We have re-prioritized our post-launch development efforts to provide the fans who want more closure with even more context and clarity to the ending of the game, in a way that will feel more personalized for each player."
Certain corners of the Internet erupted in fury after they played through Mass Effect 3's ending, or watched it on YouTube, or heard from a friend. This manifested in countless forum posts, a flood of whining reviews on Amazon and other stores, and even someone filing complaints with the Federal Trade Commission and Better Business Bureau. In a way, it's all an unusual compliment to BioWare on creating a series fans care so passionately about.
Following rumours, BioWare confirmed last month that it planned to release new content clarifying and offering closure.
The Extended Cut will be available for free on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this summer.
