Quake1 Beta Shots
by Steve Gibson, Jun 21, 2000 12:12am PDTConsidering
the massive interest in those Quake3 beta screenshots, I figured we'll make it nostalgia week here. I dug up these screenshots of the early Quake1 betas, circa 1995! Mmm.. I remember when these came out. Drool! You can also check out the attached document written by John Romero.
The cool Quake lighting can be seen in all these screen shots and a couple sprites and an Alias model as well. We don't have any Alias models working in the game at this point, but we're >this< close to getting them fully implemented with movement, proper light sourcing and animation. Screen q6.gif has our dragon hovering above a bridge above a moat. <snip>

game before it shipped, and that nightmarish last level that
they later completely replaced. it was the scariest level i've
ever played.
i've been looking for that map/someone with the beta for years...would kill to have it. if anyone has it, please mail swhalen@nfinity.com
and we'll work something out ;)
Compare the current Quake 1 community to the current DOOM community. Which one is more active? Even though Quake is newer, DOOM has a more dedicated community. DOOM has kept more people loyal to it for longer, because it is a better game in a lot of people's eyes.
Oh and Daggah:
- Quake had lots of atmosphere (I do remember panicking several times when some monster jumped out of the dark).
- Quake might have been unbalanced in multiplayer (i.e. RL or nothing), but offline it was just fine.
- The actual level design for Quake was good; it's just that the texture palette they used was ugly. Still pretty creepy though.
Daggah... there's nothing people hate more than someone who 1) absolutely worships the ground a game walks on and 2) insists that everyone accept his "enlightenment." Doom was certainly really cool at the time and for a couple of years after - but at a certain point you have to acknowledge that better games have come out and that Doom doesn't appeal to everyone on the same level you think it should.
I have Doom 2 installed (with GL acceleration) as well as Half-Life. These days I'd rather play Half-Life.

Quake was also a great single player game for it's time. I remember drooling over the screenshots when they came out.
IIRC, a few of those shots were Doom2 levels rendered with Quake, I remember a few side-by-side comparisons. I had forgotten all about the dragon. I also remember all the hype about location-based damage, and the big deal being you could hack some guy's head off, then pick it up and use the severed head as a weapon.
Riiiiight.....
Anyway, my 33MHz 486 was way to slow to play qtest or the demo or anything. Much less my crappy modem that would've spent two hours downloading it.

Benchmarks ran on a P3 683, GeForce2 @ 800x600
Quake1 - 300 fps
Quake2 - 200 fps
Quake3 - 100 fps
I think they scale pretty well don't you?

alcueso
....YOU SUCK!!!!!
Still, I cant help but shudder with joy remembering my first encounter with a fiend...
(did the Quake1 enemies not kick the living crap out of the Quake2 enemies or what?)
you guys gotta remember that we saw those shots when were still drooling over Doom (Doom2 was crap).
and for those that want the pixelated look back, go play q3a in 320x240, turn off bilinear filtering, and leave the rest to your imagination :)
It would've been a fine game if it hadn't been so poorly balanced in the gameplay department.
