Valve's New Engine
by Steve Gibson, Jun 21, 2000 12:15am PDTJosh Holes of Playnow was lucky enough to pay a visit to the Valve offices (Thanks BluesNews) and get a look at what the folks there are working on. One of the biggest things mentioned in the article is the confirmation that Valve Software is working on their own in-house engine technology. This was all pretty much speculated bordering on fact with the huge number of 3D programmers they were bringing but now...
What is holding further development of TF2 is that Valve are currently building a new engine to drive TF2, and have been doing so for a number of months. As far as Robin Walker is concerned, this new engine will allow them to do things with TF2 they otherwise couldn't have. It will also make it more scalable across a wider range of system specifications, both capable of delivering superior graphics on high end systems, whilst also making it possible to play on low end computers. It's not another re-tooling of the Quake engine - it's a completely new beast. <snip>I guess all those TeamFortress2 screenshots are now obsolete. What do they call this new engine? Hm... well I'd put my money on the name ValveTech. :) (6:20 update, how quickly we forget. Check out this news Maarten ran on May 18th.)

I recently upgraded 98 to win2k and found that when I update the servers in the half life internet connection part that it starts out like it is going to update all of them (it starts out with about 3800 servers) then it drops from about 3700 servers to 70 servers in a split second. Therefore I am only able to select about 20 servers for a game of counter strike or tfc. I filter many out to begin with but as of yesterday when I still had 98 installed I was able to select from about 300+ servers. Any suggestions or fixes to this problem in win2k?

running Half-Life in some form or another, 1919 are running Counter-Strike.
For you non-math enabled, that's somewhere around 63% of the servers.
That's amazing for a mod.
If I was Valve, I would be thanking my lucky stars that Counter-Strike was out there.
:)

I'm sure id got a little bit of a scare when HL was released, and now they're probably getting the same feeling knowing Valve is making a move into the engine territory. Carmack is god and all, but look at how willing Valve has been to work with EVERYONE in the community to make games better, as opposed to id's "we do what we want" philosophy. Should be interesting to see what happens next.

I'd rather hear that type of stuff on the radio instead of the racket they play these days.

You just have to want it bad enough. And have amazing stamina :)
There are also some great fringe benefits. Games take longer to complete. I've been playing MDK2 off and on (mostly off) for 2 weeks and I'm still on the third mission! It's great, at this rate it'll take me the summer to complete :)
Ditto for FF8, and Vampire. Hell, FF8 could last a year if you did all the stupid stuff like drawing 99 spells and crap.
On a non-computer topic, if you like technological fiction, Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon may be up your alley. It's a monster at 900 pages, but so far the first hundred or so pages have been good stuff. It's a nice alternatives to games all night long.

Anyways two thoughts..
1. Anyone want to bet that the new engine will be Xbox friendly?
2. What is the future of counter strike? Is it going to become part of TF2? A seperate game? What?

If deus ex and daikatana are evidence of what happens when you license an engine, then I say to developers: DON'T FUCKING DO IT.

Half life was a good game, and likely the best or close to the best FPS ever, but compared to other games, it's 'amazing' features were crap that other games had for like a decade before it came out (interactivity and somewhat of a story)
#149 is dead on.
2.000.000.000 copies.... che ching

When I recognized this, I would change my password to something very long and complicated that I would never remember past the point where I had to re-enter it for verification. That kept me off for awhile. In one very drastic/desperate case, I actually smashed my modem to pieces in an angry fit. That kept me off for quite a bit longer. =)
But I'm older now, matured a bit more, and I can moderate myself now.

I really care for valve. As a matter of fact, I bought half-life twice to show how much i care (a friend of mine uses my cd key so im just gonna give him my CD and use the new one). I hope they don't suffer the same fate than another developer I really cared for, Looking Glass Studios ...
*knock on wood*
Ah well guess we'll have to see how long it takes them to ship TF2, and how successful it will be. I wonder if they have any other ideas for the future (besides HL2 I mean). I'd love to work for that company someday. Or Blizzard Entertainment. :)
Goodness, it's 4:35 AM. I should probably go to sleep now! (yeah I know sleep is for the weak)

Valve should have just stuck it out and finished it. I bet it was close to being released.
It will be interesting to see if Valve and 3D Realms decessions pay off for them in the long run.
Both those 2 games are old and need to be released ASAP or suffer the fate of the Daikatana.
