Obsidian may team with inXile on Wasteland 2

If you ponied up cash for the making of Wasteland 2, InXile has added another goal that would bring Obsidian into the project.

InXile Entertainment and company chief Brian Fargo have blown past the goal it set on Kickstarter to get Wasteland 2 developed. Now, Fargo has added to that goal with the idea of getting another veteran RPG development studio into the mix.

Fargo is seeking an additional $500,000 in Kickstarter funds to bring Obsidian Entertainment into the fold to help with the game's development, Fargo said in a press release. Part of the Obsidian team are veterans Chris Avellone and Feargus Urquhart, both instrumental in the development of Planescape: Torment, Fallout 1 and 2, and Icewind Dale with Fargo at Black Isle Studios, and Neverwinter Nights 2 and Knights of the Old Republic II at Obsidian.

Obsidian's library of design tools for RPGs was a factor in his decision, Fargo said. "Regardless of the tech we use to develop the game, experience with these tools will help us efficiently design the game without wasting time and resources on the tools needed for development."

The goal is $2.1 million with 17 days to go before the Kickstarter funding ends. The original $900,000 goal was reached with two days, with the additional funding going to a Linux and Mac port. That massive positive response to the idea of a sequel, plus the fact that oversees fans can now donate through PayPal at the Wasteland 2 portal, leads me to believe that another $500,000 in the time left should be a cakewalk.

I know hunted didn't sell well but anyone can PM me if you want to play coop. I spent 3 years developing the multiplayer and if you put it on the hardest settings on PC without auto-aim it's pretty enjoyable if you invest time into it. I think the lack of explanation of how the game mechanics worked coupled with the first few levels being a lot more "flat" than the later chapters of the game gave people a sour taste.

Glad to see the company was able to find a way to stay in business. Obsidian is only a few miles from inXile and the owners know each other so I'm sure the collab will be pretty smooth.

Good thing that Obsidian isn't making the game. RTFA!:

What that means is that Obsidian’s Chief Creative Officer, Chris Avellone, is going to work with our team on the design and writing of the game!

While the programming work will remain with us here at inXile, we are looking to use a host of tools that Obsidian has created which will help us get assets into the game faster. The faster we can implement and iterate on content, the deeper the game and the more varied choices the gamers can make.

Also: For those of you who don't know who Obsidian or Chris Avellone are, they are the bulk of the brains who worked on Fallout 1&2, Icewind Dale and Planescape Torment when I was back at Interplay.

Obsidian is great. Publishers give them tight deadlines and force them to release games before they are finished. New Vegas, Alpha Protocol and KoToR II would have been amazing had they been allowed to finish them.

I'm just saying, in my opinion KOTOR II was alright, hated NWN2, and Alpha Protocol was fucking horrendous; as long as Obsidian doesn't have a huge hand in it, I don't have to be worried.

Ok OK OK! I give in. I guess it wasn't enough to back Idle Thumbs and Double Fine's Adventure Game... I FINALLY broke down and supported this one as well. Honestly, I never played this game. I do remember when it came out and I remember being very curious about it. I was just too deeply involved in Ultima, Bard's Tale, Might and Magic and Wizardry to get into this one as well.

This one sounds like it should be a winner though with the team they are putting together.

      good write-up http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/03/30/obisidian-to-co-develop-wasteland-2-on-one-condition/

i don't care for obsidian but chris avellone/tim cain seem like a good draw for a game they are shooting for.

planescape torment and bloodlines are two of my favourite games. worst case scenario is that they will deliver an utterly broken game that needs a year of patching. the game is probably being extremely good though given their record.

so yeah, play the long game and invest for the game it might be down the line. pay for a game you won't see otherwise.

if you bought a game like planescape today on gog.co and patched it up/modded it for high resolutions it would blow 90% of every other rpg out of the water.
