It's been 17 years since the very first Worms game was released, but developer Team17 Software's still mining it for all its worth. 20-odd installments later, the English indie has today announced a new entry in the turn-based strategy series, Worms Revolution.

"The game has been developed from the ground up and features a completely new game-engine," Team17 said in the announcement. "Exciting new features and challenges have been introduced whilst old favourites such as the Super Sheep and Holy Hand Grenade remain to thrill fans."

Beyond a teaser trailer showing shiny fluid effects and other jazz, that's all it has to show for now.

Worms Revolution is headed to PC and unspecified consoles in the third quarter of 2012.

I will probably get this if it isn't super buggy. Love me some 2D worms!

Agreed, the move to 3D didn't work out so well but give me some 2D worms and I'mma going to poke your ass off a cliff.

Reloaded was fun, but had a few questionable quirks... I hope this one is fit for the PC even better.

So fully 3D engine, 2D gameplay? Works for me.

I love Worms but I'm pretty tired of paying for the same game over and over. I hope this brings something new to the table.

Yeah, I would rather see something like a real-time Worms (ala Liero) rather than just another turn based rehash.

Boo this man. I'd rather seem some graphical upgrades, matchmaking, ranking, cosmetic stuff before they kill off what makes this game great. Turn based FTW.

They've been making 2D games that aren't as good as Worms: Armageddon for the last decade, and now they're just going to do the same thing in an uglier 3D style. Pass.

WA was truly the peak. Don't know. Why they don't just use it as z base and build up. I guess it had such a vast amount of content for one games price

I always liked the original the most. Didn't like what they did to the physics in Worms 2 (which Armageddon was based upon).

Man who cares. All they do is release the same game with less features and guns

is this yet another rehash of worms 2?

Worms Reloaded was a complete ripoff and I wish I never pre-purchased it. They removed everything that made WA fun.

The guys that made pixel junk shooter should make a worms clone with fluid dynamics and other fun things.

Imagine if Team 17 had chosen to use the same engine Rayman Origins used. That would have been much better aesthetically than what they show in the video.
