Tired of playing games and watching movies on your PS3? Would you rather be editing photos on it? Excellent, because Sony is releasing a new app to the PlayStation Store today. PlayMemories Studio is a downloadable program that allows you to view, edit, and share videos and photos directly from the PS3.

You'll be able to edit images by adding "action tags," such as slow motion and frame-by-frame playback. You can also insert captions and scripts.

The app will also include storage space on PlayMemories Online, a cloud-based service that will be launching next month.

Playmemories Studio won't be available for free, however. The app can be purchased for $15. There is a free 30-day trial version you can download. PlayStation Plus members and recent purchasers of Sony cameras and camcorders will be able to download the app for free.

Is there actually demand for this sort of thing? I know that sony likes to push their view of the PS3 as a universal media platform, but when I think "photo editing" I don't generally think of game consoles.

$15 is way too steep for an app. I'm totally interested if it's free. I'd be willing to pay for the online storage if it's reasonably priced and generous.
