Microsoft Acquisition = :(
by Maarten Goldstein, Jun 20, 2000 10:01am PDTThe Oregon Public Proadcasting site has an article that was written last year by Robert X. Cringely and talks about the fact that Microsoft acquisitions makes hardly anyone happy. It mainly discusses Hotmail but of course this can be brought back to Bungie. Thanks Halo.bungie.org, by ways of R-2-RO.

anyway. i sorta remember what hotmail sent to its users after the microsoft deal, something about... not being a merger but a "partnership"... and that hotmail still has control over the content... and that microsoft is only supporting them with money...
after a few weeks a small, tiny "microsoft" logo appeared at the top.
a while after that, it became an MSN logo.
then it became that huge ass MSN pic before hotmail, ie: MSN hotmail
(did i miss something? "microsoft hotmail" rings in my mind, probably one of the earlier msn assimilation stages)
now it's passport this passport that, plus that stupid ass MSN logout page that is so ANNOYING. it sucks! get rid of it!

a corporate government system can't do much worse than the current so called democratic system. in fact, it would probably more peaceful, unified and more responsive. little struggling countries who waste half their resources in defending themselves in the name of some silly handed down patriotism would just get assimilated and properly developed. we don't need petty violent nationalism anymore. its time for globalism, and humanitarinism. i think that a computer aided mix of capitalism and communism is the way to go. i don't need money if the governing institution is willing to take care of my basic needs and provide hardware/software upgrades as i complete projects. there should be a unique identification system for everyone, and everyone would get credits per contributions.
err, yeah. okay. i'll go back to vc now.
Why did the first post write F*ck? What not Fuck! Some people are soo screw by the TV and the US culture. US culture is not that great. It has avantage but also problems such as:
- People don't allow porn to show and bad words to be said on TV.
- Most people from the government think too much sex is a sin. I think it is just a joy of life.

There's a too often overlooked psychology to being bought out, that takes away from the passion and drive to continue to do well and innovate.
Whenev er a company is bought (swallowed is a better term) by a bigger one, there's always the talk about how this is a win-win situation, blah blah blah -- but the truth is that the company being swallowed is slowly digested and disappears, along with the drive and passion that lead them to be worth eating in the first place.
MS seems worse than other big fish when it comes to such feedings, imposing a rigid bureaucratic management mess that strangles creativity and forces one to become part of the collective...or die.
Thanks to Microsoft's monolopy (not that I'm against it, btw), they can get away with being a very poorly managed company and still make Bill-ions, but it also means that the companies they buy rarely have a chance to show the stuff that made them special to begin with.
I fear for Bungie, and predict we will not be hearing from them in a few years.
Anyone remember all the aquisitions Sierra made years ago (Yes, Blizzard is the exception that proves the rule--they must have Very Strong Management)? What about EA buying Bullfrog, Origin and Westwood? With all three of these it seems there best years are behind them. In another year or two, it'll be Westwho.
