Kojima says Wii U a 'special case,' requires 'unique' software

Hideo Kojima explains why Wii U games should be tailored to make use of the device's functionality, but says the Fox Engine is compatible with the system.

Kojima Productions' Project Ogre is still a bit mysterious, other than it running on the Fox Engine and dealing with heavy subject matter. One thing we can say, though, is that the game probably won't hit Wii U. Studio head Hideo Kojima recently commented that if he makes a Wii U game, it will be tailored to the device.

"Wii U is kind of a special case," Kojima said via translator at a press Q&A last week. "The way the player interacts with the device is very different than any other device out there. So if I were to make a game for the Wii U, it would have to be a unique game."

That's not to say that the Fox Engine itself is incompatible with the Wii U, though. Kojima was careful to couch his remarks by pointing out that his new game engine is flexible. "I don't want any misconceptions that [the Fox Engine] is specific to a certain hardware platform, because it's not," he said. "The way we envision it, it's more this platform that isn't mounted to a particular hardware."

It doesn't have to be I don't think, but it would be better if it was, we'll see a lot of gimmicky use of the touch screen and it'll be great if it shows up with games from developers that have actually put some thought into how to use the screen vs. just throwing random shit at the wagglemote.

The Wii was a special case too and we all know how that turned out.

I don't own a Wii but I do know they were constantly out of stock and got more people into gaming who otherwise stayed away from it. Just because it didn't appeal to you doesn't mean it's success was less significant.

The closer this WiiU thing gets the more I think it might actually be good. I have to be careful. I thought the Wii was going to turn water into wine, and in the end it was neat, but didn't do much for me.

This one at least has a comparatively classic controller as the included interface, just a massive screen in the middle, also has considerably more power (and what is likely to be at least competitive performance wise) than its hampered sibling. This one has the potential to do more without requiring it to be unique, something that simply didn't exist on the Wii.
