3dfx Interview
by Steve Gibson, Aug 02, 1999 5:39am PDTVoodoo.dk has posted a brief interview with the folks from 3dfx.
Voodoo.dk: How is opengl shaping up and will there be a good full opengl shipping with their next card ? Keith - 3dfx: Of course. The development community wants fast/stable OpenGL drivers and therefore it is a critical part of our API support. Also, given our cross-platform support, we are working hard to be the definitive OpenGL graphics card.

i doubt the nv10 will but i agree that atleast in 2 - 3 generaitons of vid cards they HAVE TO HAVE a Decent Gpu
soo the cpu limitations wont be as sever as they are now
ask ANY tnt2 user about their 16bit rendering..
75% of them will say ya it is kinda ugly
and the other 25% will say what 16bit rendering because they know it the weak spot of their card
and IF you want me too i\'ll have my friends over for another lan party and we\'ll have a little show down
CL voodoo2 12meg Voodoo3 2000pci (on 2 computers) and a CL-TNT2 ultra
and we\'ll do some of those split screen quake2 screen shots and quake3 ect.. and show which card is better in 16bit
i\'d say the voodoo3 by a long shot...
and as for the 32bit... the tnt2 has only one hurdle.. the G400... which the tnt2 bows down to... (visual quality not fps YET)
Are we all hypocrites?? I know I\'m not perfect, but I\'m seeing a lot of odd things being posted here.
and i got it for $135 including tax
and if you want me to i\'ll call my friend up and have in take a screen shot in quake3 and have him convert to jpg and post it on a webpage
and i\'ll take a screen shot of the same objet/target in q3 and put it on the same page
sure converting to jpeg will loose image quality but i just see no real differnce
sure i knew my days were numbered with the voodoo3 back in april but i knew that it would be alot cheaper and just as good as a tnt2
PRICE....
$225 for tnt2 ultra
$179 for tnt2
these are RETAIL prices not shit hole web prices
~$230 for V3 3500 (not seen in store YET)
$159 for V3 3000
and <$120 for the voodoo3 2000 before mail in $30 rebate
so <$90 for a v3 2000 and it performs pretty nice
not AS good as the tnt2 ultra
and show me a spot where i CAN see 32 bit - 16 bit differnce in quake3 i compared MONITOR to MONITOR SIDE BY SIDE
Both set at 1024x768 one 32 and one 16bit
my voodoo3 16bit
and his Tnt2 ultra 32 bit
and 4 ppl could only see 1 thing.. and that was the clarity of the 32bit but it was only when you sat there and looked.
sure it\'ll be handy for those 32bit only games
but as of now i see no reason to pay $225 for a card thats gona be obsolete/ passed up by another card in 3-4months
just decapost will ya jeeze..
as i got through here i see the SAMN damn MOFO lame ass anon looser posting \"Well my tnt2 ultra is better than a voodoo3 i\'ve owned this this and this BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA!* BLOW IT OUT YOUR ASS
who cares?
i\'ve just seen a CL-TNT2 ULTRA and i admit it looks nice but then when my friend poped in Tribes and forgot ALL about the OPEN GL FRIENDLY patch the card choked....
after the patch it was pretty smooth.. still some small glitches but ALMOST as good as if it were right out of the box on my voodoo3. and your story of 32bit rendering.. again blow it out your ass..
between me and my friend we couldnt tell the differnce from Voodoo3 16bit and TnT2 32bit exccept for the screen door effect on the voodoo3 with smoke..
i\'m sure you always look at the surroundings during the game and sit there and say oh what a Nice looking textures... your one of the loosers that pops the chat icon above their head in quake3 just b4 getting killed and then use the excuse \"i was talkn, you damn talk killer\"
i\'d love to see you at a lan party so i can rail you right up your ass.. on 2nd though.. i\'d rather blow your brains out with a quad shot gun..
btw Scary can you ban ips from your message board? *points to adsl01-56.royaloak.mi.ameritech.net
i respect free speach but this is unsolicited spam by this wanker...
WE HAVE ALL HEARD THE FUCKING TNT2 VS VOODOO3 DEBATE! ITS BEEN MONTHS AGO! DROP IT!
16bit on a tnt2 ultra DOES suck
the 16bit on a tnt2 is equilvilant to a voodoo2\'s 16bit renedering (Graphically not speed wise)
that my 2 cents on this never ending thread
I think everyone is missing the point actually (heard that before?). Everyone can be extremely nit-picky and point out all the press releases where 3dfx and nvidia have stretched the truth slightly, not so much as create a lie for sales, but make the offer too tempting to resist. It\'s basic marketing tactics, everyone that has said the Voodoo4 will be the best or the NV10 has fallen for the \"oldest trick in the book\" as they say. The fact is, not one of those cards will be the best, they both will. Reason being that no one benchmark can prove the superioraty of a video card or any other peice of equipment. For example, the P2 may come out as the winner in certain processing benchmarks, but the K6-2 is superior in the area of price. A simple word of advice that fits this situation (well, it\'s the best I could think of this fast): look before you leap.
Oh, and a previous post asked what video card I use: TNT2 Ultra. In PCs I\'ve gone through no 3d card (IBM PS/2), S3 ViRGE, Voodoo1, Voodoo2, ATI Rage Pro, TNT2 Ultra. I\'ve seen it all: the good, the bad, and the ugly. I\'ve used every price range and you know what? The TNT2 Ultra has been the best bang for my buck. That takes into consideration that it has been the cheapest card, has had the best tech support, most updated drivers, and the fastest card I have used so far. (Note that I have _never_ even mentioned the Voodoo3, so don\'t even begin to compare because I wouldn\'t probably understand and you wouldn\'t be able to honestly compare the Voodoo3 to a TNT2 Ultra)
Now let\'s kill this thread, it\'s long enough :)

#8 most people don\'t buy new 3d cards every 3 months. 90% of the people with a v3 will still have them when q3a comes out. it WILL make a difference to those people who have been sucked in by 3dfx\'s marketing.
#9 you\'re absolutely right, ATI is a great company who slow and steady always seems to win the race whilst hot-headed 3dfx and nVidia work themselves into a frenzy fighting each other ..
#12 I frickin\' care! the mini-gl never should have existed in the first place! it was an ugly hack of a solution .. and its legacy has limited game development ever since. and now the SOB\'s at 3dfx are trying to hype it, pushing it as some sort of superior API .. bullshit! we need open platforms, open standards full OpenGL.
c\'est la vie ..
