Name That Map
by Steve Gibson, Jun 20, 2000 1:39am PDTWell I was gonna just leave this story up during the late night but it is proving more difficult to identify some of these maps than I thought it would be. I'll just leave the story up all day for those of you who manage to get bored enough to want to help. Here's the deal. I'm putting together a big old before / after page but being as that I only play TeamDM and ClanArena mostly for Quake3 I'm not completely familiar with a lot of the maps. Maybe some of you FFA junkies could help out. I'll update this story as maps get identified. Here are all the beta maps, and here are all the final version maps.

I'm starting from scratch and I'm just gonna do some crazy world that has lots of eye candy and special effects, right now I only have the map planed out on paper, but I've got a start and these shots are helping me with ideas and stuff! Thans Steve

I was looking through the maps and I noticed a couple of shots that had the original q3test Railgun in them.
I liked that cyan pulse that lit the midchamber of the gun. I thought that looked pretty wicked. Granted, I understand why id might have felt the need to change it, seeing as how three other weapons share that effect, but I think the 'final' version looks unfinished. Why in the hell did they leave the midsection of the Railgun all blacked-out like that? It doesn't even match the first-person perspcetive of the weapon! Was this a little last-minute something that slipped through the cracks?
Frankly, I was also disappointed with the 'final' RG effect too. I thought the original looked more like a vapor trail than the laserbeam aftermath you see now.

"If that tier in Q3A is meant to be gothic then I am Mickey Mouse. I'd be hard pressed to find any group of maps with such an overcolored, overdecorated, unatmospheric, brightly lit sense of "BLAH" prevailing through them."
In interviews, you can learn why the maps were ruined: it was this much-ballyhooed collaborative process at id. Mappers handed the maps off to artists for "finishing." The finishing meant doodads, stupid texture schemes, mood-ruining lighting, etc. You'll even find passing remarks by the designers lamenting mildly what happened to their work in the process. I wonder if Devine had a hand in that mischief. In any case, design by committee doesn't work -- you get crapola like the "Flintsones" movie, with over one dozen (!) screenwriters working on it, and you get crapola like Q3, which could be called Q1 as interpreted by the Backstreet Boys.
What id had once, it needs again. Strong, independent creative minds allowed to do what they love. A sense of individualism, personal vision. One by one, the most distinctive level designers who were at id have fled or been fired, and the current crew is looking flabby and uninspired.

* The central structure (furthest from camera) looks like the area above the RL (might be an exact match).
Very loosely matches it, but I think that's what it evolved into.

Beta15 = DM18
beta19 = DM15
beta24 = Tourney4
beta26 = Dunno, but I swear it looks like Tokay's Towers ;)
beta31 = CTF2
Just guesses, but that's what they make me think of.

beta12 I think is actually either an early shot of q3tourney1 or an unreleased map.
beta15, believe it or not, is actually an early version of "The Space Chamber" before I went and completely redesigned it into a space map.
