Unreal Tournament Info

Word in this GT messageboard thread is that Epic games is contemplating a server program similar to the "primary server" setup that the Valve/Sierra guys put out for Half-Life with a server release a bit before the actual client in preperation for the large initial client load on the net when the release hits.

The server-only build we're talking about will probably be a lot smaller - as it won't have textures, sounds, or music. But we want the server admins who get free copies to have the client as well becuase we want them to set the servers up so that they're fun to play, have different map lists, etc, so sending out CDs to them makes sense.
You can also check out this post talking about the HUD, as well as the Unreal Technology page which talks about the Linux port.

  • I agree with #23. Cheering for your own team and encouraging them to new heights is one thing. Calling the competitors assholes and bitching on and on about how much they suck is a completely different one.

I have no problem with people exclaiming that Quake 3 is gonna rule the Universe from now on to forever. I am getting damn tired of hearing how much Unreal/Quake3/Kingpin/Descent/whatever sucks and that whoever plays it must be a gay/moron/inbreed though.

I do believe that the Shugashack is one of the more Quake3 firendly pages around. Hell, I go here before I go to any other site if I want the latest on Q3. I also believe that Steve has the guts to admit that Quake3 blows if that for some extremely wierd reson should be the case. Atleast I hope he has those guts.

And for what it\'s worth; Unreal and UT does *not* use the same netcode. Epic split up the two codebases a couple months ago. Everybody that claims that they\'ve played UT has most likely only played an old beta that can be compared with the Quake3 IHV test that leaked out. Q3Test is much more stable because all id is concentrating on in it is gfx and netcode. If John and gang couldn\'t get that up to par then I would seriously doubt their abilities. The UT beta and IHV test was not meant for public consumption and therefor has a lot of bugs, debugging code and other, well known, flaws.

So, until you\'ve actually played UT, you don\'t know, K? You can assume or guess that UT won\'t be fun since you didn\'t like Unreal but you won\'t *know*!

  • For me anyway, Fact: Unreal plays fine for me, not as smooth as Q3, but it plays fine wiht the 225f patch.

Oh jeez somebody actually pointed out the obvious. That q3a netcode puts UT\'s netcode to shame.

I have no problem stating my opionion about Unreals netcode, I deleted that piece of shit off
my hardrive months ago. So I have no desire to download a patch and put 600 megs of crap back on my computer
it would just be a waste of space. Like I said in the GT forum Epic screwed me over once but not again.
UT WILL SUCK, count on it, I know I have played it.
