Deadly Premonition remastered for PS3

The notoriously broken yet wonderful Deadly Premonition is finally coming to PlayStation 3 in the west in a remastered edition.

Deadly Premonition is notoriously divisive, seen by some as a hugely wonky and strange mess but by others as a hugely wonky and strange wonder. While it hit both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in Japan, only the Xbox version was released globally in 2010. Fortunately, that's about to change, and PlayStation 3 owners will be treated to a remastered edition of Access Games' Twin Peaks-inspired survival horror.

"We're working on a PS3 release. We still have a few hurdles to overcome, but hopefully we'll be able to show you something at E3," Deadly Premonition executive producer Yasuhiro Wada said in a GDC presentation attended by Gamasutra.

1up's Bob Mackey caught up with Wada, who told him that it'd be "an enhanced PS3 remake (with new content), not a sequel." Initial inaccurate reports out of GDC had said it'd be a sequel. Wada also told Joystiq that it'd pack PlayStation Move support.

Deadly Premonition designer Hidetaka 'SWERY' Suehiro mentioned the possibility of a revamp last year, telling Metro it was "just an example," but, "we might create a version that is like a director's cut with a higher quality of graphics so that it would appeal to a wider audience." SWERY has also spoken of hopes for both a sequel and prequel, though.

Wada mentioned in the GDC presentation that his new company Toybox was working with SWERY on a new game, teasing that it might walk a similar path to Deadly Premonition and could also be revealed at E3.

Now, while I could embed an official Deadly Premonition trailer here to show you the game, this cutscene captured by Youtube user 'pothocket' shows far, far better what makes it such a treat:

f y i Deadly Premonition is one of my most favourite games in the world. I'm so happy PS3 owners will get to play it too. You're in for a treat!

The PS3 edition won't fix the things that are broken, or I suppose I should say wonky. Or I'd hope so, anyway.

The game works fun, but so many of the systems and mechanics and ideas are just... wonky. People don't make games that way. Some of the wonkiness feels like it's on purpose, and really did make me think about video games in general, but some... wonky.

There are two endurance runs of this game on Giant Bomb if you want to see just how bad it is.

The insanity keeps it entertaining but I'm glad I didn't actually play it, the gameplay looked terrible.
