MechWarrior Tactics' hexy first screens revealed

While free-to-play stompy mech games Hawken, Reign of Thunder, and MechWarrior Online focus on piloting the lovely robots, MechWarrior Tactics puts you in command of a squad of them. Announced last month, it's now been revealed in the first screenshots.

The stompy mech game has returned, at long last, though curiously as a free-to-play phenomenon. Hawken and Reign of Thunder have the FPS action side of honking great robots covered, while MechWarrior Online is taking the sim approach, and MechWarrior Tactics is returning to MW's turn-based tabletop roots. The first screenshots of MW Tactics have dropped, showing a hex-based grid, terrain obstacles, and lances of jolly nice robots. Commanding your 'lance' of four custom-made mechs, you'll get to smash other people's pride and joy across ranked matches, global leaderboards, and all that jazz. As befits its turn-based nature, players can have multiple asynchronous games on the go at once. Collecting, upgrading and customizing your mechs feature largely, which is how the free-to-play game plans to make money. According to publisher Infinite Game Publishing, it "allows players the freedom to collect and purchase vital combat and cosmetic resources to outfit each Mech." Hopefully, paying will only unlock gear early rather than give distinct advantages, as 'pay-to-win' models have proven effective at alienating players. MechWarrior Tactics is coming to PC in 2012, developed by A.C.R.O.N.Y.M. Games and Roadhouse Interactive. Check out the official site for more.

I had a buddy in College who was sorta quirky as a gamer. Like, I had to drag him into Quake and he hated Civilization II. But played the hell outta WarCraft (yes, the first one) and MechWarrior 2.

One day he borrows my PC Gamer demo disc of the month. One of the games on there is MissionForce: Cyberstorm

At the time I had never heard of the game. We're just about to go to lunch when he installs the demo. He sat there and played it and played it and played it. I had given up on him and gone across the hall to my room to get my stuff (dorm days) and was walking out the door to go get lunch by myself when he and his roomate came down the hall to catch up with me - turns out they had hit the 100-turn demo limit and were now willing to go to lunch. He picked up the game while we were out and played it to death, in that jeez-your-grades-will-suffer sort of way.

Apparently the game sold well enough for Sierra to commission the sequel, Cyberstorm 2: Corporate Wars, which the aforementioned buddy HATED. The demo alone turned him off to it. And so did everyone else. It basically took everything good and put it in the shredder.

          So much for that franchise.

I used to play a game called Crescent Hawk's Revenge (it actually yelled the title at you when you booted it up - and digitized voice was still somewhat unusual at the time). The game was awesome and I played the crap out of it.. but maybe I was too young or something.. about half way through it got incredibly hard. I couldn't keep my mechs together. I was getting torn apart. I'd love to play a modern version of that game though. It was a lot of fun. (I actually still have the box).

i wish some indie company would do this for warhammer40k and just subtlely change all the names... i know games workshop wont do this as it's such a cash cow selling the minitatures...
