[UPDATE: Since the time of our initial post, Ubisoft has released the official box-art for Assassin's Creed 3, which confirms that the game will indeed take place during the American Revolution. New image added, at the end of the article.] Assassin's Creed 3 has been announced in name only. Fans have been speculating wildly what the next setting in Ubisoft's stabbing adventures will be. It appears Desmond's final story will take place in America--during the American Revolution. While unconfirmed, a series of leaked images reveal the new setting. This promotional image captured by Kotaku shows an 18th century Assassin in front of ye olde American colonial flag. The site speculates that the character will be half-Native American. More compelling evidence comes via a Game Informer leak. The site accidentally promoted an Assassin's Creed 3 "hub" with the following image:

Whoops.

Given GI's hubs are reserved for their cover stories, it's likely that Game Informer will "reveal" Assassin's Creed 3. (Except for the fact that it already has.) [UPDATE: Here's a close up of the official box art released by Ubisoft after our initial report.]

You say you want a revolution? Well, y'know.

Assassin's Creed 3 will be available this October.

Which of the founding fathers will Ubisoft turn into secret Templar Agents?

I'm personally hoping for Alexander Hamilton.

That's a very safe bet. Given that Paine and Franklin were both deists, it's easy to assume that they'll be on the Assassins' side.

Can't see the founding fathers being Templars. I'd imagine they'd make the British into Templars in this instance.

As far as familiar names, you'd almost have to believe Benedict Arnold's a Templar.

I still love that a major triple A game ended with getting into a fistfight with the pope.

I'm surprised they went for it even though the real Borgia was enough of a bastard that really no one should take issue.

Well...the pope they chose to make a Templar was Alexander VI (a.k.a. Rodrigo Borgia) and he didn't leave the best of legacies.

Just look at a list of Founding Fathers that were Freemasons - pretty easy to pull from.

James Madison (Templar) vs Thomas Jefferson (Assassin) would be the obvious twist I can think of...

I've always thought that early American time... Colonial etc.. is a time period which games (or even movies) rarely touch on. There must be room there for some very interesting settings and stories.

that's definitely one of the best things about the AC series, the unique historical settings. not a lot of games set in the crusades or the renaissance or the american revolution, for sure.

Yup, and it ended up being extremely cool. I loved just looking over Damascus etc and seeing these old cities somewhat the way they used to look... that is a very cool part of these games for me.

pretty sure they hid some pieces of eden here so that should be interesting.

I wonder how they'll handle the costume design. It's one thing to portray clothing of the Dark Ages or Renaissance, but we have a firm grasp on the 17th century. A man running around Philadelphia in a white cloak with daggers bristling all over him would certainly be conspicuous.

Awesome, I was hoping for this. Hopefully it also means you travel to multiple cities, unlike the last 2 games.

The prevalence of firearms in that era might make gameplay problematic, though. Wonder what they're planning to do about that.

totally. i liked AC2 and ASSBRO so much i don't know how they'll match it. that's most of why i haven't played REV yet, because i know it doesn't really measure up (even though i'm sure it's pretty good)

Rev's alright, the introduction of tower defense (optional) and a single smaller city to play by don't really change much of the core gameplay. Play it more for the story and to go on killing sprees with some of the newer animations.
