MechAssault series developer Day 1 Studios is returning to the wonderful world of big stompy mechs with Reign of Thunder, after being sidetracked by Fracture and F.E.A.R. 3 (though it still squeezed small mechs in, at least). The studio's new mech 'em up is clanking towards PC, where it'll be free-to-play.

While MechAssault was set in FASA's BattleTech universe--the source of MechWarrior--Reign of Thunder is "an all new Mech IP." Day 1's again going for fast, arcade-y action, the debut trailer shows, and boasts of bags o' customisation.

The trailer also hints at how free-to-play model will be supported, showing an in-game store selling weapon upgrades. Presumably players will be able to use their own actual cash money to get snazzier guns sooner--standard free-to-play fare.

Day 1 does have an official Reign of Thunder site, but there's nowt on it for now.

Between Reign of Thunder, Hawken, and MechWarrior Online, it's going to be a fine time for stompy robot fans without a single penny to buy new games.

If Reign of Thunder gets sued by infringing BattleTech, then BattleTech will get sued by Asians, and I mean ALL asians. I believe they came up with it half a century ago :P Gundam or something like that...

They had to remove LAMs from Battletech after various legal issues related to macross/robotech came up

They have had to remove FAR more than that. They have an entire collection of shit ripped off from anime shows that have been taken OUT of battletech in the last decade.

First-person or third-person? I hope not third - mechs need weight and 3rd person will make them seem like toys.

Dammit, stop already with the P2W shit. That market is saturated!.

Nobody wants my $60 doing a LAN capable MW/MW-clone?.

10 years of wishing for a Mechwarrior or Battletech or any mech game at all and then suddenly there are 3 coming out that are exclusive to the PC?

Yeah, good lord- this is way too fast-paced and jerky, I don't want to play something with Mechs just flying all over the place at goofy speeds like this. The gameplay looks pretty awful from the trailer.

Eww, just watched the trailer. The mechs were bouncing around everywhere like toys. Screw this, I miss the Mechwarrior and Heavy Gear series :(

But what if the mechs bunnyhopped QW style...that could be cool!

That actually has me more interested. Too many slower paced games...I need more speed!

Sadly this doesn't look appealing at all - mechs moving around way too quickly, just feels off somehow. Plus F2P? Usually doesn't equal a great game experience or a cheap one. No thanks.

Why nobody makes a game with mechs like the ones from Metal Gear? Those where the only good ones x)

This, thank you. Mech Commander was amazing. I loved calling in airstrikes and popping a pilot, then jacking his mech.

I'm all for more mech games, but the MechAssault games were abysmal. You cant generate excitement based on those at all.
