With both Resident Evil 6 and Street Fighter X Tekken due to launch on consoles a while before they hit PC, you may be wondering, why are the PC editions of Capcom's games so often late? The answer's simple: because they start them later.

"Quite often, PC development starts when the console development finishes or nearly finishes," Capcom USA senior VP Christian Svensson posted on the Capcom Unity forum in response to a fan's question (via Eurogamer).

"Unless we start sitting on the console code and not releasing it until the PC development is complete (which we can't do from a business planning perspective), there's going to continue to be some small gaps unfortunately."

"We try to keep the gap as small as possible and at times, we have been able to make them simultaneous (Dark Void, Bionic Commando, BCR, MotoGP, Dead Rising 2, Dead Rising 2:OTR)," Svensson said, though let's note most of these were developed externally.

"Oh, and Arcade Edition was shipped on PC within 1 week of the console retail release (which I'd consider pretty much simultaneous)."

One might wonder, then, why doesn't Capcom start work on PC editions earlier in the development process? Ah, that'd be telling!

What lies, exactly? They just admitted that their PC versions are late because they don't start working on them until later.

Calcium has said pc game piracy is an issue they face for pc games. This is probably just easier to say "we start later" than to face shit storm of crying piracy in low sales or x reason.

Yes they have been releasing pc versions for games but why not say that before? Now just say "late"

They aren't talking about the 6month/ year delays that they had before. Those delays they blamed on piracy.

Yep, definitely a lie. Yoshinori Ono has said himself that it was piracy in the past. They don't want people with PS3's to see a $60 game on Pirate Bay a week before it comes out.

Who cares. They put out quality PC ports of console titles. They are and have been a console developer first. I am glad that they decided to focus on putting out decent PC ports of games. Ever try RE4 on the PC. It's terrible along with most of their previous ports.

Really? Is that why you can't alt-tab out of Street Fighter 4 without it crashing every 2nd time?

Is that also why you can't turn the music off, just down almost all the way?

I've been buying capcom games since 1992 and I think their quality control has always been poor. Another example. The online experience of SF4 on the PS3. Why is it so bad?

It's criminal in such a competitive game that it's frequently unplayable. It's just a joke. They have great designs, but their implementation is very ordinary.

Shame... unfortunately it's not just Capcom that this happens with. I have a PS3, 360 and Wii, but I buy most of my games for PC because I prefer the higher frame rates, better resolutions and better all around fidelity. I keep the exclusives for each system, then buy PC for the rest. I have quite the pile up of games though, so waiting isn't always that bad... especially when they hit Steam sale prices (:

Makes sense, although Capcom never makes games I want to play. I guess I'm too 'Western'.

All that Capcom makes now are sequels or derivatives of franchises whose original creators left Capcom long ago, or Street Fighter.

Asura's Wrath releases today; I've seen no reviews of it yet. That's not good. There's a reputation of only the good reviews making it out before release; either Capcom's embargoing all reviews until after release, or the game just isn't that good.

They should make a console/pc bundle for their games. I'm going to end up buying SfxT for ps3 and pc as soon as its available and never touch the console version after this.

Honestly, Capcom is one of the rare japanese publishers that even bother releasing their games to PC, and they are usually fairly priced, so I can forgive them coming out a bit later, for whatever reason.

To add more strangeness, they've confirmed before that with the engine used in their newer games -- including Devil May Cry 4, Resident Evil 5, and Lost Planet 2 -- they develop for PC FIRST, then port it to consoles. I would assume that what they mean here by "PC development" is the extra stuff they do after releasing the console version to make the PC version even better. Really, I don't know how you could be dissatisfied with Capcom's PC releases of the past few years, they have been amazing.

All of Capcom's games are developed on the PC via the MT Framework. None of them are actually ports.

Last time they were asked about this, Christian Svensson stated that it was the time needed for Q&A that delayed the PC release -- which makes sense; but then again there was the other time they blamed piracy for the delays.

Works for me. More companies should optimize PC games for the PC, and console games for consoles.

And yeah, the games' tardiness sucks, but there are lots of other games to play in the meantime.

It makes sense tbh. Capcom are primarily a console development house, so getting the console versions right is definitely a priority to be successful as a business.

As a die-hard PC Gamer, never owned a console in my life, I have to say that sure, the delays aren't great. But every Capcom game I've played on PC has been pretty damn good.

SF4 was great and SSF4AE is still great, no connection troubles, no crashing when Alt-Tabbing, only complaint is GFWL but that's nothing to do with Capcom.
