Notch 'can do' $13 million for Psychonauts 2

How much would Notch have to cough up to make Psychonauts 2 a reality? $13 million--a sum the Minecraft creator "can do."

Sure, Tim Schafer and Double Fine Productions are swimming in a boatload of Kickstarter'd funds for their upcoming adventure game. But, $1.7 million isn't enough to make a new Psychonauts game. How much would it take? The original game cost $13 million to make; a sequel would have to match the budget of its predecessor.

Minecraft creator Markus 'Notch' Persson has been sitting on a lot of cash since the runaway success of his blocky creation game. Notch offered to support a sequel, with the multi-million dollar sum no problem for the designer-turned-publisher. "Yeah, I can do that," he told Schafer.

"I feel like I was being proposed to on the jumbotron at the baseball game," Schafer recalled to Kotaku when describing Notch's original tweet offer.

While it seems like the pieces are falling in place, a sequel would still be years away. "These things take time to figure out--if they can be figured out--so please don't expect any Psychonauts 2 announcements any time soon," Schafer previously noted.

But what would a Psychonauts 2 be about? "We had a lot of plot elements that were backstory in that [first] game that we planned on revisiting in the future and tying it back in," Schafer told Kotaku. "We had a longer story arc planned for those characters."

Why do publishers fund anything? If you had money to help create something you loved would you do it? The issue is usually whether or not you'd see a return on your investment and profit.

Well if he's publishing thats one thing, I didn't read the article but when I hear about it, it seems like he's "donating" money...and who says Schaffer can't raise it on his own?

Schaffer said that he can't raise it on his own. Publishers shoot the idea down left and right.

Pretty much, but he'll make that back in like, 3 months, after taxes, so that's not really an issue if it doesn't sell well.

It is an issue because Minecraft sales won't continue forever, and it's not clear whether or not Mojang will have any real sustainable income after that.

He's funding it because he wants to play the game. Considering how the original game performed, funding the sequel is a very high risk venture.

make money bringing people games they like? this industry wasn't born on the back of Call of Duty. lots of people with different taste would play a game like Psychonauts 2 if it had marketing this time.

That I get, been in the industry for 20 years ;) I didnt know he was looking to possibly publish? if so thats different...but if he was just like "Hey Tim, I'll give you $13 mill to make this game I like..." just seemed kind of odd.

Honestly I never cared enough to read the articles.

Last one was built on 15 million and while they'd have to put a fair amount more into it visually (and hopefully some more QA) they basically have the story and direction for it already. I'm not sure how much they can cut and still make a game worthy of being called Psychonauts 2.

They also have their own engine (thanks to BL and Trenched/IB) for the game world, that cuts a lot of licensing/development costs.

Depends on the computing power afforded to render them. Same render time on more powerful equipment (which they would likely already have, unless it was outsourced previously) means better cutscenes for probably the same cost.

They had some issues during development, Schafer was doing a lot of rewrites causing other people to twiddle their thumbs and the game direction, even genre, kept changing.

I think that partially depends on how well the controls translate, I know the Android version blows but then most android versions blow so that's not a very good comparison.

it will work like any console fps and the kinect shit on top will mean they have microsoft pushing it. they are also the only dev that can post patches and updates whenever they want, showing how much support and leeway ms is willing to give them.

It's a platformer with some funny dialogue and situations. The levels are all varied and have you doing something unique for the most part, a couple of them are really good but a few are pretty bleh.

It's on Steam & Xbox Originals.

No, not like Braid at all. More like a less tight Mario 64 with a lot of collectable bullshit, good dialogue encased in an adventure game caliber story, along with entirely unique gameplay for each level, all of which take place in the characters' minds. If that makes any sense. It probably won't unless you've played it :P

that's a great tldr of the game, and more or less covers why I don't understand the excitement for a sequel. it's neither a great adventure game nor a great platformer, it's only very unique.

I really wanted a sequel at the time because of the ending, to see what happened when Raz becomes a full fledged Psychonaut and they all take the jet to do whatever it was they were planning to do outside the confines of the camp. It was like Halo 2 all over again. Let's finish this! ... years later. Or never in Psychonauts's case.

But really I jjust wanted another Tim Schafer game and Brutal Legend didn't exactly deliver. I'd still love to see the continuing adventures of the Psychonauts, but I'd be just as fullfilled if this Double Fine adventure game delivers at all. I really liked those Lucasarts point and click games and think they could still do something special in that genre and style.

In one of the more recent interviews I read they apparently had a lot more backstory for the characters they had that they simply weren't able to include, P2 may very well be a prequel if that's where most of their already available story is.

Same here. I played most of it and just got bored. This seemed like the usual 3D platformer stuff with a few RPG elements thrown in. Story was predictable and most of the humor wasn't really funny.

Of course, to stir the pot, I thought the same of Beyond Good and Evil.

And so the torches come out, I think The Big Lebowski is a horrible movie.

            =)

I wouldn't say the story was very predictable, the relationships were, but the story itself was pretty off the wall. The humor was a bit dry for my taste, and relied too much on quirkyness. That being said, I felt that all the mediocre elements combined bring it to something more than the sum of its parts.

I enjoyed Psychonauts but I don't see the strong desire for a squeal, I also really enjoyed Full Throttle and Grim Fandango. I think the enjoyment came from the Unique experience those stories sort of worked and had a beginning and an end.

Sam & Max always made more sense for more episodes and to a degree Monkey island worked that way as well. Telltale did a good job on those.

I would much rather see NEW characters and NEW stories from Tim and his team.

I always fantasized about doing something like this if I ever hit the lottery for a large amount. But, as good as Psychonauts was, I don't think I'd throw out 13 million on a franchise that clearly didn't strike a chord with the mainstream gamers.

I give Notch a tip of the hat for having the guts to do this but there are some other franchises that are worthy of funding a sequel to that stand a better chance at recouping at least a portion of his investment.
