Report: Unreal Engine 4 to be revealed in 2012

Epic Games vice president Mark Rein suggests the company will begin showing off Unreal Engine 4 this year.

Epic Games is working on Unreal Engine 4, and may even be ready to debut it this year, according to Epic vice president Mark Rein.

A first look at the engine this year would come well ahead of a planned 2014 launch for the updated tech. However, Epic's Mike Capps said he wanted UE4 to be ready day one of the next console generation.

"People are going to be shocked later this year when they see Unreal Engine 4 and how much more profound an effect it will have," Rein told G4. He didn't give more detail on when we could expect it, but a trade show like E3 seems the most likely candidate.

By showcasing a UE4 tech demo this year, it will give Epic ample time to show off the engine's new features for interested third parties. Shacknews has contacted Epic Games regarding the report, and will update as more information becomes available.

There is not real definite line in the Unreal Engine though. They just arbitrarily decide one day that it's no longer UE3. Up until then all the features are the same. I think it's probably cut off at a point where they can start charging more for the next gen engine and seeing that the new consoles are around the corner it's perfect timing. Long story short, don't expect any huge tech leaps beyond what you saw in the Samaritan demo.

I'm no Tim Sweeney but that is only logical. New software is usually built upon old one, not from scratch. The Samaritan demo is already very impressive on its own. Whether they call it UE3.5 or UE4 doesn't really matter.

really not that impressive imo, they should take their time and embrace the 2014 release date. Hate to say it but this reminds me of an HD remake of an old game by id software called "Kingpin". Polygons, sprites are fairly visible but I guess that's what you get when you focus on ONE company focusing on it. iDtech5 > UE 4.

And it will be severely gimped for "next gen" consoles. How about releasing a proper PC game for a change, Epic?

And how is it your strong suit? The article states that they want it to be ready day one for the next gen consoles. We've got a rough idea of what tech next gen will have, which is already just middle of the road of current PC offerings. Since we've known for a long, long time that PC is no longer a primary focus for them, where does that put us?

The Unreal Engine is pretty damn scalable and I see no reason why that would change any time soon. Also, even PC players benefit from some of the optimization they do for consoles. It's a a win/win.

Eh even there, simply the lack of care for the PC is saddening. UE3 suffers from things like not so great mouse handling (Read: Lots of acceleration, typically feels "floaty", etc) or the lack of Eyefinity/Surround support out of the box. (Bioshock debacle anyone?)

Something that other engines that are more PC focused deal with better.

It's unfortunate because UE3 is actually really quite good otherwise.

Also, the mouse thing is a preference and we are currently using Eyefinity "out of the box" with the builds we have.

What does that have to do with anything? Sweeney is a senior guy at Epic, if Sweeney has a public opinion about the PC platform, and the opinion is that the platform is less than a first priority for Epic, then that reflects Epic's general attitude. As it does when Bleszinski talks about PC.

If you want to argue about how Epic feels about PC then talking about the quality of Unrealengine on PC is not the way (because there's plenty of issues with UE3 on PC).

If you did want to make the argument that Epic cares about PC, then you might point to Mike Capps mumbling something a little while back about how cool it is to make PC games: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Gamescom-Mike-Capps-PC-Gaming-Gears-of-War-Unreal-Tournament,13235.html little was heard of that since, but it is definitely a stronger argument about Epic's attitude towards PC gaming than this thing you're doing here where you're asking people to ignore that Sweeney is a senior member of Epic and that when he gives a talk or an interview his opinion of the PC as a platform reflects that of Epic's general attitude, simply because he is not a game designer but an engineer. Especially when that fits in with how other people like Cliffy and Rein talk about the PC. That's just a very long stretch Fred.

This is a thread about engines and UE3 supports the PC just fine. As I mentioned elsewhere, we are a licensee and our product is PC only so I am very familiar with it.

In all fairness, I thought it said Unreal 4 when I first read it as well...which I knew couldn't be right (I don't remember an Unreal 3)...so I reread and was like "yeah my mind just saw what it wanted to see"...well actually what my mind would really want to see would be "UT4 made through a crazy collaboration between People Can Fly and Epic to make a fun batshit crazy UT game".

There's nothing stopping any console focused developer from releasing a good PC version of their console shooters except their own willingness to do so.

Well I don't wanna speak for the guy, but as a hardcore PC dude, a "PC focused" game when it comes to Epic shooters, would not mean much work at all. I would ask that the UI is clickable, that the mouse feels good, that it have a better fov than consoles, and that the game be rebalanced to suit the fact that I can aim really well and kill dudes easily. That's all. Bulletstorm did a lot of that.

just had to decrypt the INIs to turn off mouse acceleration. That's nothing! In my day I had to use a boot disk to get a game to run. It was pretty dumb though

I'm not talking about mouse acceleration. In many multiformat shooters and other games today mouse tickrate is directly tied to framerate, and if you can't stay north of 60 at all times you will not have smooth mouse movement, regardless of mouse accel. Playing on a i7 and a 570GTX this is not too much of a problem in many games, but not all ports are well developed and still do cause problems without some kind of modding. For example Skyrim has shit mouse no matter what unless you disable vsync and then install a frame limiter that stabilizes your framerate so you don't get a spastic cursor. It's a pain.

I can see Sony coming out with a new console in 2013, if for no other reason than to try to do to MS what the 360 did to the PS3. I honestly can't see Microsoft releasing a new console until late-2014/early-2015, though. With the massive push towards Kinect, the continued high attach rate of the 360, etc., I honestly don't see any reason for them to come out earlier.

While they, of course, run the risk of getting PS3'd and having their later release screw them, I think they're looking at the PS2 as inspiration. Namely; it had a technically equivalent competitor already in the marketplace and two technically superior competitors on the horizon, yet it managed to completely own an entire generation of console gaming due to marketing and 3rd-party support. Microsoft seems to be more in the position of PS2-era Sony rather than PS3-era Sony, at least imho.
