Microsoft & Bungie

by Maarten Goldstein, Jun 17, 2000 5:01am PDT

All the "professional" gaming news sites are catching up with the Microsoft buying Bungie story (as seen in our story from Thursday, and the followup yesterday). Gamespy, Daily Radar and Xbox.IGN all have their own stories on the rumors to which there still hasn't been an official response.

"Word is that certain Bungie personnel are moving to Redmond in the next couple of months. From across the country."
It's now also rumored Take Two, who owns 20% of Bungie, will be buying the rights to the Myth and Oni games leaving Bungie with Halo.

  • *IF* on Monday this rumor is made fact, then:

    1) Halo (all platforms) will be delayed about one year (Fall 2001 vs Spring)
    2) OpenGL support would likely be canned because DirectX "is so much better."
    3) MS's Gaming ZONE net play would be REQUIRED because built in internet play is "too complicated for Joe Gamer" and even worse... it's FREE!
    4) Bungie's assholes' will be a little wider and a little greener.

However, I can't believe that the Mac version would be canned. That would be just too blatantly anticompetitive and Bungie would never agree to bend over that far in the name of green.

    Why? Why?! Why?!!

there are about 29 million console players, 11 million PC game players, and 7 million who play with both

    Oh, that's why.

  • Let's assume a few things here...

    1. Microsoft is buying Bungie.
    2. Microsoft would not want a software house of theirs making a Mac version of ANYTHING...
    3. Even though they've been heavily into Mac gaming since their inception, Bungie will be forced to drop the Mac version of Halo(three lonely gamers clutch their one-button mice and weep all over their huckleberry shitboxes.)
    4. Steve Jobs is angry as fuck.

I remember the first time I sw that intiial Halo footage...it was filmed at a Macintosh convention and Steve Jobs was showing off this l33t new game called Halo, which represented the incredible future of Mac Gaming....uhh..., Steve, you're fucked.

    *hawkeye*
(somehow I think Bungie would never allow their Mac port to be cancelled.)

  • Step back and really look at the situation. All credit to Bungie for making the best looking game to date, but: If those X-box demos were any indication, what would MS want with a game that doesn't even look half that good? The sales for MYTH:II were near 100,000. Nothing that would attract any real attention from MS. Oni wouldn't do the X-box justice either, if they took it from Take-Two that is(which we all know they could.) Would they buy Bungie to get one game on thier roster? Who knows. Maybe they only want the publishing rights from Take-Two for Halo? Who wouldn't want it? Also keep in mind that Apple has an active interest in Bungie. I am sure that support from the big fruit has helped Bungie out a bit. I really doubt that the Mac port would be canned, seeing as well that even MS likes making money off Mac s/w.
