Capcom net sales slump 29%
by Steve Watts, Feb 02, 2012 5:15pm PSTCapcom has reported its earnings for the nine-month period ending December 31, 2011, and it shows a net sales loss. The company's net sales were approximately $661 million, down 29% year-over-year, and operating income dropped 47.2%. In the remaining three months of fiscal 2011, Capcom is planning on sell 2 million copies each of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City and Street Fighter X Tekken.
The report isn't all bad news, however. Joystiq reports that part of the reason for the slump is that it's being compared to the prior year -- which had massive hits like Monster Hunter Portable 3rd and Super Street Fighter IV. This year's hits include Monster Hunter Tri-G (1.2 million units), Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 (800,000 units) and Dead Rising: Off the Record. Those all did reasonably well, and just compare poorly to prior blockbusters.
Andriasang reports that on top of the two near-term releases, Capcom points to Dragon's Dogma as an example of a new franchise, and Resident Evil 6 as a game with a faster development time.

Capcom has reported a 29% year-over-year drop in net sales for the period ending December 31. Its sales were weak compared to the prior year, which had more big hit franchises.

Here's another one: Lost Planet 2, which was apparently terrible. And Dark Void, which was also not so good. Yeah, Capcom seems to be in a really bad funk, with either super-derivative annualized sequels, diluted follow-ups of series whose original developers left long ago, or really really bad original properties.
