Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning's online pass unlocks single-player content

Electronic Arts has decided to lock some content for the single-player RPG Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning behind a one-use, online pass.

21
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is a single-player action-RPG, but that hasn't deterred publisher Electronic Arts from locking some of the game's content behind a single-use "online pass." Folks purchasing new copies of Big Huge Game's newest title will find their codes in their boxes, but folks procuring used copies will be in a different boat. As noted by Destructoid, the "Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Online Pass" unlocks the "House of Valor" faction quest, which includes "seven additional single-player quests."

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning's online pass revealed

Warner Bros. received some flak for locking Catwoman behind an online pass in last year's single-player Batman: Arkham City. Those without a new code would be able to buy her campaign for an additional $15. EA implemented "online pass" features in Mass Effect 2 as well, locking an extra character and additional missions behind a DLC pay wall. It's likely (but not confirmed) that the "House of Valor" faction quest will also be available for purchase separately. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning comes out for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 on February 7.

I get the feeling that Jeff, the author of this post, was expecting some outrage. Instead we got, "Dude I hear this game's pretty awesome." I love you guys.

By the way this game is awesome. Also 7 out of hundreds of quests seems like the minimum amount of content that will go behind a pay wall. That catwoman stuff was the same way. Fun but no big deal.

I didn't realize Ken Rolston was at BHG. Kinda makes sense for what Amalur is.

Man I would die for a proper RoN sequel. RoL was not scratching that itch.

This is an insanely generic rpg and I don't understand in the least why it's getting so much attention. It has a combat system that would only be considered barely passable if it was an action game, but since it's an RPG it's the second coming of jobs.

The demo was a shit ton of fun. And there isn't enough info on the game world for me to determine if it's massively generic yet.

How can you say the demo is fun and then say you don't have enough to determine if it's massively generic? I spent over an hour in the demo and 2/3 through I was so mind numbingly bored I killed every last npc in the demo including all villagers.

Dude....Gabe from PA disagrees with you:
" In the end I just want to make sure this game doesn’t slip past your radar. I think it would be easy to look at it and think it’s a pretty standard RPG. In reality Amalur is a unique experience full of great ideas. Do yourself a favor and check it out. -Gabe out"

You can't disagree with Gabe. He's like nerd Jesus I'm assuming.

I don't see the problem. You get more game if you buy it new. They aren't penalizing used game purchaser's they have provided incentive to buy new.

And good on them for it too. Used market always feels toxic to game developers. The only problem I have with it is when it can take advantage of the uninformed buyers (ie mom at gamestop).

      • reply
        January 27, 2012 4:09 PM

Certainly a valid choice. At least that way, the developer still gets some money in the end, instead of it all going to Gamestop who did NOTHING to develop the game. They just act as parasites off the relationship between developers and gamers. I can understand you being upset by this, but the more the used market becomes less viable, the more money goes back into actually making MORE GREAT GAMES.

        Just some food for thought.

I've played the demo. Seems like it's OK. Might even be good.

But, while I have very little problem with "online pass" type things for multiplayer access, I strongly dislike the idea of it for singleplayer content.

This one...may just have to wait. Too many games in my backlog.

Consider that this game has no multiplayer content. So, single-player content was the only choice they had if they wanted to incentivize new game purchases.

I don't know if they potentially could have included it on the 360 disc (no capacity excuse for PS3 or PC), but all multiplatform AAA games today are planning DLC out of the gate. This is their "Be happy we're not charging $15 for it a month after release" post, I guess.

The publisher on Amazon is listed as EA and they've made a statement in a FAQ or thread (I forget which) that all digital distribution copies require a 1-time activation through Origin, except for the Steam version.

Wish I could edit posts. Anyway, the only reasons I can think of to get the Steam version over a version that's going to be linked to Origin:
              A) You're on an anti-Origin crusade.
              B) You want Steam achievements.
              C) Steam tends to have better/more frequent sales than Origin, so you might have more opportunities to get DLC cheap on Steam.

I'm pretty close to just getting the digital Amazon version for the $9 off.

ign says: "It's arcadey, to be sure, but when you compare it to the three popular fantasy RPGs of our time -- Skyrim, Dark Souls and Dragon Age -- Reckoning easily outclasses all of them in the gameplay department. The competition isn't even remotely close in any respect."

      Wow.

I enjoyed the demo, and I definitely think Reckoning is the most accessible of the four, but claiming it outclasses them all in gameplay is rather silly. Between the three they listed alone its like comparing apples to oranges. I think from the perspective of a casual gamer, Reckoning would probably be the favorite for sure, but among more experienced RPG players it'll probably be considered the weakest in terms of depth of play.

You know... I was put off by the art style at first but I like what they are going for and the developers seem very passionate about the game. For the first few minutes of the demo I still wasn't blown away... but I found that I couldn't stop playing the demo (on the PC). Then I played it again.. then I downloaded it on the 360 and played it AGAIN. I don't know... it's like "Co...STANZA" it kind of gets in your head and doesn't get out. The combat system looks shallow on the surface but seems to get relatively deep once you get good at it.
