The Deus Ex demo from Ion Storm scheduled for release tonight on Gamecenter is running into some snags but it looks like it will still be released today. 7pm update: Its Oout! Grab the demo here. (Thanks Stomped)

- Civilization is near collapse. The world economy is in chaos. The middle class no longer exists. Deadly viruses have ravaged the earth's population. Terrorism runs rampant. It's five minutes before the apocalypse. - This demo features one full mission and the training mission taken from the retail version of game. This demo version of Deus Ex will not work in Germany. Eidos will be releasing a German version very soon.
Here are a bunch of screenshots of Deus Ex ( and newer E3 shots) since people like kabex are asking :)

  • Well I did this to get the demo to play much better on my celery500 w/geforce DDR 160MB of ram:

With all settings/video/sounds on high/max at 800x600 minus the goofy graphic shit you wont miss like coronas:

Get a copy of the D3DDrv.dll that comes with UT. I dunno what version UT is when you first install, been a while(havent tried the 4.20 D3DDrv.dll to see if it runs better then this)

Go into the deusex.txt and go down till you find the d3d and get these changes going: (note still tweaking so if something works better let me know)

  • I really don't understand the negativity here. Everybody has to be a goddamn critic. Warren Spector, for those of you who don't already know, is brilliant for the highly original gameplay he created with System Shock and continued in the early stages of SS2. His brilliance has yet to be duplicated by any other designer and each game has been superb, including Deus Ex.

So why should so many criticize the man for continuing the groundbreaking gaming strategy he has already started and knows most about? What if I had taken one look at Pulp Fiction and said, "Damn...this movie's just like friggin Reservoir Dogs," and never finished the movie? What if all of us had taken one look at quake and said, "Hell...this is the same game as Doom but with better tech," and never unlocked the CD?

I think my initial point is clear to those of you who I care to explain myself to. Anyone requiring further assistance seeing such aforementioned point should bone up on their schoolwork, or return to a similar institution...you're not quite done.

On the whole, This game snatched everything that was good in some of the greatest games of recent time and created a beauty worthy of the same praise.

--Extensive Training was present in Half-Life and SS2 and we loved it.
--Cyber\Augmented skills were in SS and SS2 and we ate that shit up.
--Unreal Engine continues to do wonders for those with decent cards and drivers, and we are proud of our FPS and stunning visuals.
--Stories have accompanied good games forever, and this one has one that CHANGES! Is that not a good enough for you? Half-Life had two endings, SS2 had three, this one has variations in the first friggin' level!

I could, of course go on, but comparing this game to others is not what I wanted to say. There's a lot of trash in these posts written by kids who will never make a game, and couldn't show up to work if they did, that have the nerve to rag on a brilliantly designed game. I don't see a line of people ripping Force-Commander apart. So why are we so quick to criticize the great efforts?

    "DEUS EX MACHINA"
    "God From The Machine"

Deus Ex rocks my face. Deus Ex presents me with a gillion ways to complete a level...twice as many to kill people. I have never been able to throw unconcious bodies into the ocean before. This is simple to control, whereas previous attempts at inventory based FPSs have been tricky to operate.
Deus Ex whips the llamas ass with a belt sideways. Do you realize what kind of a machine JC will be once fully loaded? I love this demo and will buy the game, regardless of it's similarities to it's family predecessors. You guy's are like a bunch of rabid hyenas, christ.

Thanks for reading this far. All in agreeance, please respond.

  • Ok just finished the demo.

I don't know about all the choppiness that people are talking about. I only encountered one major area and that was in the training level where you cross that acid or whatever it was. There were other minor occurances when observing the statue of liberty. But overall the game ran fine. I don't have nearly as beefy system as a lot of posters have.

Graphics wise you can tell that the ion guys hated this engine a lot. In some interviews they comment that the engine has its flaws but the redeeming feature is unreal ed. I think they would have been better off with using a modified quake 2 engine ala halflife and soldier of fortune, both of which looked a lot better. And yes the SS2 engine looked a lot better then this considering how similar the gameplay is.

Graphics aside the game play is almost exactly like i wanted it. I love how there are so many different situations to a problem. In some situtations i would save the game right before some action and load and play that situation a few times just to see how the action would turn out. Towards the end of the demo if you look around you will get a lot of hint that perhaps the good guys really aren't all what they seem. This is done through hacking and such. This is definatly not a game where you can rely on weapons, at least in the early levels. I can see once you get some serious augmentations then you will be able to. But as of now i recommend relying on stealth.

The only real gripes that i have about this game is that it takes a lot of memory. The save games take up 8mb each, but I think there is some kind of leak some place because i watched my hd space fall around 200mb from just loading and saving games. The other envolves some path finding problems with the AI where they would just run into instead of a door and continue running.

I highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoyed Metal Gear Solid, Half-life, or SS2. It combines aspects of all of them. I know i already have mine pre-ordered.
