If you've been enthralled by players' tales of adventures in Dwarf Fortress but found it simply overwhelming, you may want to keep an eye on A Game of Dwarves. Announced by publisher Paradox Interactive at its 2012 convention, the strategy management game developed by Zeal Game Studios is coming to PC and PlayStation Network.

Taking command of dwarven settlements, you'll send your subjects down into randomly-generated maps to gather resources you need to expand and upgrade your dwellings. Digging deeper yields rarer resources needed for the fancy stuff, but naturally brings the risk of stumbling across more 'orrible enemies.

Handily, your little army of dwarves become more powerful as they toil away, so your warriors will be better at fending off nasties, and your craftsmen can arm them with better equipment. Paradox says that an order systems lets players "easily control oodles of dwarves simultaneously without the need for extensive micro management."

There's no word yet on when A Game of Dwarves will be released. Check out Paradox's product page for more information.

Yeah, they need to hire the narrator from Bastion.

But aside from that, color me interested. Like most roguelike games, the lack of a GUI has been the main reason I don't play most of them (<3 Dungeons of Dredmor).

Only in that it has dwarves and digging. It's pretty fun, but has almost nothing in common with Dwarf Fortress.

Gotcha. I figured it looked like DF and had the word Dwarf in the title so it's probably a Zynga-style "accessible" version of DF but I guess not.

Not recommended. I got it, played a few levels, but it's realllllly boring. The OP game sounds like it has much more depth (character levels, digging 'down' etc).

In other news, Dwarf Fortress should have a new release pretty soon. It will have vampires, necromancers and eye rotting mists.

About twice a year the DF bug bites me and I play obsessively for a few weeks. I'd better clear my schedule.

yo im kinda excited about this. hopefully they make it so you don't have to read for hours to be able to play it. that's the only reason i don't play DF.

So it adds what Dwarf Fortress lacks, and subtracts all that makes Dwarf Fortress amazing. Hmmm...

To be fair, there is very little that has a fraction of the depth of Dwarf Fortress. It's probably the single deepest game I've ever played.

Well, there's probably less depth in DoD than say, Stone Soup, but there are several more systems available to play with (Crafting, Artifacts, Selling, Quests), along with graphics and GUI, so it kind of averages out.

Yeah but still, the game would be better represented by simple voxel engine in a 3D world rather than 2D. Moving between Z-levels is retarded.

dwarf fortress is an amazing game but a lot of the design decisions are totally unjustifiable

I think losing Z-levels would make the whole thing harder to control. You could move to a 3D voxel engine, but I think tiles and Z-levels would still be necessary just to make interaction and navigation manageable.
