How to download Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 DLC today

Call of Duty DLC is out today... if you're a premium Call of Duty Elite subscriber playing on Xbox 360. If you want to get hands on your content, expect to jump through a few hoops.

Call of Duty DLC is out today. Usually, a new DLC release is accompanied by a frantic flurry of traffic to Xbox Live's servers. Today, it's accompanied by a bit of confusion. Why? Because the DLC is only available to a select few.

First, you must play Modern Warfare 3 on Xbox 360. Then, you must be a Call of Duty Elite premium member. Next, you must download the content from within the game store, not the Xbox Live Marketplace. Finally, you'll be able to access the content through new Elite-only playlists.

If you are a PC or PS3 player, or you don't have Call of Duty Elite, you will be unable to access this "early" content drop. (For example, if you are a paying PS3 subscriber, you will still have to wait to get the two new maps.)

Here's a video overview of exactly what to do:

Included with today's update are two maps:

  • Elite Drop 1: Piazza Map:

This seaside Italian getaway is anything but idyllic, as tight corners and branching pathways pose great risk at every turn. Close-range combat dominates, and the team that best utilizes flanking routes will most often come out on top. Attacks from behind, above and below are an ever-constant threat. Keep up your awareness and don’t get taken by surprise.

  • Elite Drop 2: Liberation Map:

A militarized Central Park stretches across a vast landscape, ripe for long-range sniper and LMG fire. Mounted turrets on either end lend power to anyone brave enough to expose themselves in exchange for deadly firepower. Plan out your movement and always be aware of nearby sightlines to avoid becoming fodder for the enemy.

Call of Duty fans will have to get accustomed to this splintering of the fan base, as Activision has promised twenty content drops for Elite subscribers by year's end. We'll let you know when you non-premium, non-Xbox 360 players can get access to these new maps.

I neglected to buy Elite, but still, how shitty is it that PS3 players paid the same extra premium for early content...and still have to wait for it? -_-

They're just taking a dump on everyone who plays this game any possible way with each new rendition of the series.

I thought about subscribing to this shit, but then I realized all my friends I play with aren't subscribers. Why would I want maps earlier than the people I play with all the time? Fuck it, this time around I might not buy them at all.

So glad I bought the PC edition and get none of the perks; Elite is not even available for PC users yet.

Or when it came on a disc full of stuff that had actually been worked on *after* the game had come out.

So first we had FPS. and it was good. Then we had new maps for FPS, free for download. It also was good. Then we had FPS that had new maps, but we had to pay for the maps... and while disheartening, it wasn't too bitter of a pill for many to swallow. Now we have FPS that has new maps that not only do we have to pay for, but we have to pay for the extra service to download them when they first arrive.

That, my friends, is just going way too far. Why in heaven's name are CoD fans letting Activision do this to them? People warned them that it was going to get worse eventually when they started selling map packs. And now it has gotten worse. And the fans of this game likely are going to continue throwing their money at Activision while simultaneously dropping their pants and bending over, begging to be taken.

I just don't see the logic.

Bravo! You've just pointed out something that I already conceded - that you have to pay extra for the service to download them when they first arrive.

Why do CoD fans put up with that behavior. What possible value can they see in being made to pay twice for maps? I could see the point of it if the Elite service made it so the maps were "free", but it doesn't even do that. It's just giving you the opportunity to throw more money at Activision sooner rather than later.

Yea, all 4 updates are free if you purchased the elite status, if purchased separately, the 4 planned DLC will cost $60, if you have the elite sub you'll get the same stuff, for $50, and earlier.

I think the interesting thing about the confusion here is that... this will be commonplace. Especially for the Casual Gaming Joe that doesn't browse forums and sites like this. I can't help but wonder if Activision is shooting themselves in the foot.
