"When it's done" - three little words that infuriate some and delight others, and three words which no longer stand in for Guild Wars 2's release date. The subscription-free MMORPG will launch on PC "later this year," developer ArenaNet announced today, preceded by the beta testing ramping up.

"We recently finished our first closed beta test, and we're now ready to hold progressively larger events," ArenaNet president Mike O'Brien wrote in a blog post.

"In February we'll invite select press to participate in beta testing, and in March and April we'll aggressively ramp up the size of our beta test events so that many of you will have a chance to participate. And of course, this all leads to the release of Guild Wars 2 later this year."

Only another 342 more days to wait at the very most, gang. April will obviously be the very earliest we could see Guild Wars 2 launch, but don't get your hopes up for that. It's still fine to get your hopes up for Guild Wars 2 in general, of course.

Here's the shiny Gamescom 2011 trailer again:

I'm curious to see if this'll be the MMO revolution people keeping saying, or just a disappointing PvP game with uninteresting PvE.

Guild Wars has always kind of stood on it's own. It's setup is closer to that of Diablo, than a typical MMORPG, and I don't see the sequel being anything different.

Guild Wars 2 (like Diablo 3), will be something fun to play either along-side or while taking a break from everything else.

Very cool. I'll be both playing this and TOR.
