Max Payne 3 trailer breaks out the big guns

If your trigger finger has been itching since you found out Max Payne 3 was delayed, watching a new trailer focused on weapons and targeting might help sooth it.

Have you found yourself preoccupied with thoughts of diving through windows and shooting men in slow-motion? Don't worry, now that Max Payne 3 has been delayed, that's perfectly natural. Simply watch the new trailer focused on weapons and targeting, and you'll find any itching in your trigger finger will soon subside.

The video covers topics including Max's swish movement, mixed dual-wielding, the new inventory system, and how all this plays with the lovely-looking animation tech.

Max Payne 3 is now slated to dive onto Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on May 15, while the PC edition isn't due until May 29. Rockstar said it had no comment when asked by Shacknews to explain the disparity. Following the delay, Rockstar has extended the deadline for pre-ordering MP3's statue-toting Special Edition. The $100 pack o' swank will now be sold until April 2.

"rockstar has set out to reimagine the gunplay mechanics of a 3rd person action shooter, by finding a way to implement the targeting of a first person game"

Umm it's always had the targeting of a first person shooter. Aim the fucking crosshair and shoot. Trailer looks like shit.

Goddamn EA forcing multiplayer shooting into every new game and dropping the rich RPG experiences Max Payne is known for on the ground.

This is pretty smart. Making the simple action gameplay of Max Payne deeper is exactly what they should be doing for the sequel. Not every game needs weapon slot limits though and I don't think MP is one of them.

MP2 improved the combat over the first game; whereas MP1 devolved into shoot dodge-spamming every enemy, in 2 it made sense to fight like Chow Yun Fat. Hopefully they'll remove all remove as much cheesy mechanic spam and peekaboo shots here as they can. Weapon balance does need improving as well since shotguns were useless in the previous games and ammo conservation was a non-factor, rendering careful use of different weapons moot.

What I find amusing and satisfying is that not only are they not going with Mark Wahlberg's Max, of which there was some concerns among fans following the movie, but they're using the original voice and looks of James McCaffrey, something they didn't do even before it went Hollywood. That's a nice touch.

I have to say, that looks pretty awesome! Great animations.

Maybe Rockstar can bring some of these fluid shooting/moving mechanics to their typically non-fluid and clunky GTA franchise (I'm looking at you GTA5).

I don't have high hopes for the PC edition, most likely same old story with dumbed down consol game..

pretty animations. but there didn't seem to be any need to aim at anything to kill it. I smell console aim assist.

well the onus is on Rockstar to put together a real man's shooter after all the console sandbox games that are more about screwing around in big environments. I'm skeptical but it would be nice if they surprised me.

Looks great. Man that animation tech is smooth. Every game world needs to move like this. I don't see how you can hate on third person or cover systems. Game looks like it's going to be fantastic fun gunplay.

If they actually succeed in making the GTAIV engine run smoothly on PC, then I'll be sold. But until I see proof otherwise, I'm going to assume that it's an input lag riddled mess :(

This doesn't use the GTAIV engine. From what I know it uses the latest version of the Rage engine. The one RDR used.

That would be the same engine as GTA4 then, just a newer version of it. That was their first big game to use the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine after the table tennis one.
