Over a year after Doom was pulled from Xbox Live Arcade due to publisher Activision's rights expiring, the console port of id Software's seminal shooter is returning. If, for some reason, you want to play Doom on Xbox 360 rather than PC--split-screen multiplayer being the only real acceptable answer--you may buy it again from today.

Doom vanished from XBLA in October 2010 without explanation, though those who'd already bought it could still play. After a little prodding, id's sister company Bethesda explained that "expiring rights" were behind the vanishing act, and that Bethesda itself would be re-releasing Doom for sale on XBLA "soon." That took a little longer than expected, then.

Doom will hit the Xbox Live Marketplace "later today," priced at 400 Microsoft Points ($5).

it's a good port. don't forget the ease of setting up an online MP game.

I'll admit it's my favorite version of the game. Using the twin-sticks for it is great since fine aiming isn't as important as it is in modern day shooters. Can just kick back on the couch and play coop with a buddy (or 3!) either on the couch or very easily over XBL.

Actually the best port is a bonus on the DOOM 3 Collector's Edition for original Xbox. Works great on 360, and has both Doom and Doom 2.

I could be wrong, but I think he means the remixed sound FX and soundtrack, which were also used in Doom 64 and were excellent; and the Doom 2 enemies like Revenants and commandos (fat zombies with chain guns; I think they were called commandos) in Doom 1 levels on higher difficulties.

the lighting, sound fx and ambient music ... and everything had a spooky echo to it. Didn't think the shotgun could possibly sound better but I was wrong! So great. Such a moody port. Really fit Doom well.

Ah, I'd forgotten about the lighting! The PS port really was the best take on Doom, a far moodier and eerie game than the original.
