Microsoft & Halo

by Steve Gibson, Jun 16, 2000 4:12am PDT

The plot thickens on the Microsoft & Bungie deal. The word I've been told by 'a little birdie' is that if in fact something like this does go down, Microsoft is considering delaying the PC release of Halo making it an X-Box debut title. I'm also told that this deal is not yet set in stone, but if things do go through we will probably see something from Microsoft in a couple of weeks. FYI, there are MS and Bungie employees who read this page every day, considering how easy it would be to refute this information it's strange that nobody has yet. I'll keep you guys posted on anything else I can find out but leave it to Microsoft to delay our beloved Halo eh?

  • There is another potential problem besides a 'delay' of Halo.
The CORPORATE SUITS. Once they start wandering the hallways, straightening thier ties and giving people sideways looks, watch the fuck out. I can already hear the comments being made in the 'interface meetings'....

"According to our marketing surveys, we need Halo to have a little more @$%^ this and a little less $&@#$. Perhaps a hidden 'pokemon' model, or even a 'pokemon' level. Our target demographic survey shows we would sell XXXXX more unit sales and XXXX more game sales. After all, it is a console game. {the 'suit' straightens his tie and his lackey sidekick smiles broadly} So, if you could get on that right away, we would appreciate it. Also, Mr. @#$%!@# has been sort of a problem, so we have to let him go. Please inform payroll and have security escort him from the building. After all, we're all family here at M$.... eh, Bungie, and sometimes you have to make adjustments."

  • Allright. Here goes.

Microsoft buying Bungie is one of those strange, twisted things, that will bring up so many different points that distract from the core argument. Console vs. PC, is Microsoft really Evil (yes), game delays, Halo vs. Whatever, etc.

What it all really boils down to, is how Microsoft purchasing Bungie, or a part of Bungie, will change Bungie as a whole, and if/how it will affect their games at all. Halo, in particular, isn't due for a while yet, and neither is the X-Box. I'm guessing we would've seen Halo before the X-Box, and if MS wanted to delay it, it would probably happen. Nobody even knows what the X-Box looks like yet, and the fact that it won't be around for another 2 years sort of makes it seem less impressive in the console scheme of things. Halo was a way off, but not that far...

The only thing that Microsoft can bring to the table in this agreement is money. There's nothing other than money that they have, and Bungie wants. And there are much better publishing houses that could invest in Halo, or Bungie in general. MS has an AVERAGE track record with games. Some are good, some plain suck, and some don't even get noticed. It's a toss up. Other publishers are available that won't mess with Bungie's original vision/concept for Halo, and it'd probably be very worthwhile for Bungie to look for some, *if* they need the money. Otherwise, let them put it out themselves! Bungie's made amazing games in the past, and always on their own terms. The Marathon series is incredible, Myth was just as good and innovative, and Halo and Oni were looking to re-shape their respective genres as well.

Is this just another case of Microsoft seeing some cool technology (GUI, etc.) and then wanting to take it for themselves? Probably. They've never done it for any reason other than their own profits before though, and I wouldn't trust them to do it again. I don't want to see Halo being played over the Zone, cause it SUCKS, and I don't want Halo to be anything other than what Bungie wants it to be. As for the buisness side of it, if the Bungie guys need a publisher, at least find one that doesn't have the reputations/legal troubles/problems that Microsft does. Bungie is about games, Microsoft is about money. The two have never gone well together, and just because it's Bungie and MS doesn't mean they will now, either.
