The Rakghouls are just starting to rise in Star Wars: The Old Republic, but BioWare has plenty of other pots on the stove for future content. In a new interview, game director James Ohlen discusses the team's plans moving into the next update and beyond through 2013.

The first major update focused on performance, while updates to game systems are being mostly saved for the the second update in March. The team is also working on a a second part of the Rise of the Rakghouls storyline, and a new planet called Denova, which will include a new Operation, a new Warzone, and possibly a new space mission.

Taking the longer view, Ohlen describes a few chunks of content that various sub-teams are working on. "In terms of game systems we're releasing the full Legacy system," he said. "It's a system that really benefits players who like to play alts - instead of having characters who have no relation to each other you can create a family, and when you're playing any member of that family you earn experience points for your Legacy tree. Those then unlock abilities and perks that help improve all your characters. I think that's going to be popular. Characters can be related to your main character in all kinds of ways."

Another team is working on new guild features, like Guild Banks, due with the March update. "Then we have a team focused on Player vs Player," he continued. "There's obviously a strong community of PvP guys, and we want to make sure that they feel that they're getting additional stuff to do. So we have them focussed not only on adding new Warzones, but also adding new systems and new functionalities. The first thing that PvP fans are going to see is PvP rankings; you're going to be able to compare yourself against other players."

So just how far is BioWare thinking ahead? Ohlen told CVG that "We have people working on content that won't be showing up in the game until 2013," says Ohlen. "We have writers already finishing off content for that, so I can already play through stuff from 2013 content - just not with voiceovers." He says the complexity of their content requires them to take a long-term approach.

I wish more was being done to fix some of the inconsistencies and balance in classes. By the time they roll out the legacy system most people will have two 50's and a slew of alts I think too...kind of defeats the purpose of a system that's supposed to augment your leveling.

The game's still in the first month, and much of the population isn't even level 50 yet. This makes addressing balance issues somewhat problematic, because a lot of what people complain about is either due to how pvp is currently handled ("bolstering" stats to lvl 50), or stuff that goes away once you have the full compliment of abilities.

Now, at lvl 50, there do appear to be some big issues (ex: tank threat gen + basic aoe abilities are poop), but those won't become more apparent until much more of the playerbase is at the level cap.

Hmmm don't know how you are playing but my guildmates who are testing SWToR hit 50 several days ago.

I was in testing, and got in day 1 of early access and I'm only lvl 40 on my main. And I've been going too fast on him lately, passing up some quests. Some people don't rush to end game.

            My main's level 50 also.

This doesn't mean the bulk of the active population is level 50.

Correct - but end content isn't for the bulk of the population and if they don't feed the "rush hungry folks" then that spear head will jump ship.

The way normal mode ops are implemented, yeah -- they are for the bulk of the population.

I've been playing almost daily for an hour or two and I'm not yet 30. Of course I've actually been enjoying the story, listening to all the dialogue and taking my time. I seriously doubt the "majority" of the population is 50

Same here. I hit level 30 last night playing at a fairly leisurely pace, though I only created my character and hit a couple levels on launch day due to queues.

One thing I noticed is rested experience can really fuck with the flow of the game. Having a full 2 days' rested XP put me a few levels ahead of where I should've been for my level 15-ish class quests.

I'm level 35 and having a blast with my Sith Marauder. Still have a Bounty Hunter I'd like to start working on, and my 3-year old son and I play a Sith Inquisitor (only level 6) together.

I'm in no rush for the cap, probably for the first time ever in an MMO. This does not feel like a grind; it feels like a real story, which makes me worry about level 50. Like, do all the characters go silent? Am I stuck repeating my lines over and over again in Dailies? Will it go all Age of Conan after leaving the island? Sure hope not. Most people seem ok but hungry for more at level 50.

Your lines are mostly stock responses (I'm sure you've heard 'Your name, now!' a dozen times), but so far, the experience hasn't changed from level 1 to level 30 in terms of quality of quests dialogue.

I'm working on my bounty hunter now because I find the marauder rather boring. :/
