S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 developer GSC Game World hinted in December that there was "cause for hope," following reports that the troubled Ukranian studio was shutting down. "Official news" was expected in January, and now it's confirmed: work on the survival shooter sequel will continue.

"The Stalker team is extremely happy! Why? Because we are continuing work on Stalker 2 after the holidays," reads a message posted yesterday by the official Facebook account.

Of course, exactly what has happened, and under what conditions work continues are unknown for now. One of the reported reasons behind GSC's potential closure was a failure to secure a console publisher for the game, supposedly too costly to develop only for PC. We should hear the full story in time, but for now: huzzah!

They probably secured funding in some way from a Russian bank or outside investor. Who knows how that is done in the former USSR, but I am glad to hear that they will still make this game.

I just hope it isn't some watered down console version. That would make me sad.

Yeah a former USSR country must do this stuff very differently! And the country which launched the first atomic bomb also does things differently... oh wait.

Agreed with your last point though.

Huh? What is your point, exactly? Did you read the previous news articles that the Russian police got involved and started searching through files, etc.?

We have our problems in the US but you don't hear about that too often.

How do you know the searching trough files wasn't warranted? The US even has big influences on copyright laws in other countries (Sweden is one) so the fact that "a former USSR" country searches trough files shouldn't strike you as something odd.

The record clearly shows that I'm not a fan of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. I've tried to be. I've bought the game twice (retail on launch and $5 on Steam) and installed it around 5 times. I just can't get into it. I don't like it.

Too hard? Did you get far into it to get a scoped rifle? Also did you try the Complete mod? Giving it a darker/longer night cycle is an instant improvement in the first game. Also it makes stealth and headshots a lot more effective.

I've never tried a mod and I didn't get too far into it. It's been years since I've played it but I remember a train yard and invisible enemies. I had a shotgun at that point. I really don't remember anything else.

Maybe I should give it another shot :\

It's VERY hard at the start. You assault this group of bandits with a shitty pistol at the start, then later have to go through a blockade under the train tracks. You can avoid this blockade, there's a tunnel full of anomalies you can go through.

The Complete mod is one package, just run the exe to install:
              http://www.moddb.com/mods/stalker-complete-2009

Its main goal was higher res textures but it changes everything. Enabling stealth and headshots makes your early encounter a bit easier as you can sneak up and headshot the dudes with the shitty pistol you get. The game gets much easier with a scoped rifle if you're good at twitch shooters.

There are invisible enemies but they're pretty rare.

I still think he was running into anomalies because there are no random bloodsuckers until after Agropom (which he never reached, near as I could tell). And even then, they 'uncloak' just before attacking.

I didn't even do that one until it was pretty much all I had left to do in the Warehouses. By then I was a killing machine, so it wasn't as bad as I feared. :D

How about the first bloodsucker mission in Call of Pripyat? Holy fuck, I was down in that basement when a blowout happened- almost had to change my pants! The same thing happened later when I was going after the stash in the car down in that crack near the Claw anomaly - and I hate Snorks. :(

The best way to get started I found was to do a bunch of Sid's missions right off the bat (after doing Hunter's and Nimble's missions) and loot the shit out of all dead dudes, selling what you don't want to Sid to upgrade your shit as quick as you can before you try to cross the rail bridge - and make sure you get an MP5 from the bandits (after helping what's his name with the blind dogs) before you leave for the Garbage.

I found the game pretty rough at first to be honest, but I went back a second time since then really enjoyed it.

Once you know how the mechanics work even the start of the game is pretty easy (especially if you find the hidden mercenary suit in the starting camp and gather some bandages before the farmhouse fight). Just got to be really careful going into that battle...

I actually kind of miss those first few ventures into the zone. It really felt like a survival game then, you trying to work out what the hell is going on. You rapidly understand the game and pack 100 health packs and a tonne of amazing weapons and the game loses some of that feeling.

I used to be the same way, but STALKER taught me to prepare properly before a mission. If you do that, even when (not if) you get surprised, you usually have the firepower to deal with it. And bloodsuckers are relatively rare in STALKER (in the first one, at least :D).

I've gotten a bit into SoC with the C'09 mod. It has a special atmosphere which is improved by the mod, and some nice gameplay elements but it's just so rough. There's annoying quest bugs, and I really dislike respawning enemies and patrols. The quests should be fewer and more meaningful, and what you do in the world there should be persistent.
