Sony: No PlayStation 4 announcement at E3 2012

Once again, rumours have started spreading that a next generation of consoles will be unveiled at E3 and, once again, they're being denied. Sony consumer products president Kaz Hirai is the one doing the denying this time, insisting that a new PlayStation won't be announced at the video games show in June.

"Andy (House) is absolutely right in that we are not making any announcements at E3," Hirai said at a roundtable interview at the Consumer Electronics Show this week, attended by The Wall Street Journal (via Joystiq).

Hirai was referring to comments made recently by Sony Computer Entertainment president Andrew House, who said "I don't think we're contemplating talking about anything to do with future console iterations at this point."

Hirai added, "I've always said a 10-year life cycle for PS3, and there is no reason to go away from that."

Of course, a 10-year life cycle doesn't necessarily mean that we won't see a new console from Sony until 2016 or so; the PlayStation 2's life continued for several years after the PS3 was released.

I think they have an announcement ready, but they wanna wait till Microsoft makes their move. If Microsoft does announce the next console at E3, then I would bet money that Sony will announce it at the Tokyo Game Show.

This, be interesting what happens at E3, personally I hope the MS next console announcement is not bogus as well.

Yes, they probably don't want to or aren't quite ready to make any announcements... but just to cover all their bases they probably have SOMETHING ready in case MS make their move and catches them with their pants down.

kaz doesnt flat out deny the announcement of a new console, just that they are not making an announcment at e3 - technically the press conferences are pre-e3

also, andy house states that he doesnt think they are - nto exactly concrete denial either

personally, i think microsoft are more likely to announce new hardware but not sure where the current kinect and kinect games development fits in with it all

Not surprised. They will keep the ps3 going as long as they can.

Maybe we'll see a Google console, with a free sketchup-style SDK for it.

The scary thing is "continued" isn't the right word for the PS2 life cycle. It still gets the barest trickle of releases and you can still buy the hardware.

Personally, I hope they take there time...

Seems like there's still plenty off potential left in this generation. And, the longer we have to wait, the bigger the gap, and the better the 'next generation' should be. (In theory anyway).

I agree. I'm perfectly happy with the way things stand now. I see no need for a PS4 currently.

Also keep in mind that there's no backwards compatibility on the PS3 for PS2 games, unless you bought a launch unit with the BC module.

Point. I can't be the only one with a sizable PS2 library I still enjoy. I figure when Sony eventually decides to formally discontinue the PS2 hardware I'll buy one to have as a backup for if/when my current unit dies.

at this point isn't it just as "easy" to use your computer with PCSX2 ? (Assuming you have a good computer, which I don't :( )

Kind of wonder if Sony has the resources to R&D a new console right now. As a company they are not doing too well.

Sony is essentially an engineering company. R&D is built into their infrastructure. They're not going to create something akin to the Cell again though, no.

I never trust any announcement about an announcement anymore. We've all been burned too many times both ways (either saying there will not be and there is, or there will be and there isn't).

I dunno how Xbox owners feel, but I feel like the PS3 still has some legs... at least 2 or 3 more years.

All I know is that I'm in no rush to put down $300+ for another console. I have a very comfortable game rotation right now where I'm playing my PS3 and 360 somewhat equally, with a bit of Wii here and there. Personally, I'm not hungry for new hardware. I'm content with my console trinity.
