Steam touts 2011 sales, 40 million accounts

Valve announced a set of impressive 2011 stats today, including its seventh straight year of increased sales, five million simultaneous users, and more.

Valve is celebrating a successful 2011, with its seventh straight year of more than 100% sales increases. The developer also revealed that the recent holiday sale pushed the number of simultaneous users over the five million mark, and a handful of other impressive stats.

The service now boasts 1,800 games and 40 million accounts, and in 2011 it pushed out 780 petabytes of data -- double the amount from 2010. 14.5 million copies of Steamworks games were registered, a 67% increase over 2010, and the suite is now included in more than 400 games.

All of this good news comes amid increasing competition in the market, from services like OnLive and EA's launch of the Origin online store. But with such successful numbers under its belt, the team at Valve probably isn't too worried.

"Steam and Steamworks continues to evolve to keep up with customer and developer demands for new services and content," said company president Gabe Newell in the announcement. "Support for in-game item trading prompted the exchange of over 19 million items. Support for Free to Play (FTP) games, launched in June, has spurred the launch of 18 FTP titles on Steam, with more coming in 2012. Looking forward, we are preparing for the launch of the Big Picture UI mode, which will allow gamers to experience Steam on large displays and in more rooms of the house."

        Not an actual setting, but if you Alt+Tab out of a game you can manually pause and resume the download you want to get it going again while in game.

            I find bringing up the steam overlay first helps that out, I never thought about starting up a download afterwords though.

          It's a solution, but not the best one. Even when playing online/MMO's, there should be an option for people with good connections to continue their downloads regardless.

        I'm thankful for the option to screenshot any game on Steam, as many game developers lately like being assholes and not allowing screenshots via key combination. They either don't document it, or just whine and say "Waah, just hit "Print Screen" and quit out of the game". Lazy.

        I would like to see old-school screenshot capability in games, for those who want it in TGA or PNG format for higher quality.

        Aside from intellectual property concerns, I don't know why developers wouldn't allow screeenshot capability. It's free word-of-mouth marketing, via people posting in forums saying, "Awesome, look at this!".

          Are there any lightweight programs for taking screens? It seems for some applications you need to disable desktop composition or PrintScrn will shoot the desktop even if you're in a fullscreen program.

              i'm not a fan of dxtory (there's no S) but my point applies to it as well. it's worth spending a few dollars to get the ability to capture video and screenshots from any game regardless of what the devs built into the game

                YOU HAS BAD TASTE. Yes, you're correct about that. Everyone should have fraps/DXtory.
                (I just like it because it's much better for stream capturing, significantly better performance).

          I don't see how that is lazy, maybe 1/1000 of people use the functionality. I'd rather they put that effort to something 999/1000 people would use.

          Forget screenshots, I want video capture integrated with auto upload to youtube. Steam has lagged on this feature. Also video broadcasting could eb handy in some instances.
          And I want the offline mode fixed.

        Why PNG when you can already save high-res shots in TGA? At least in TF2 you could.

          Some games do it, such as the Doom 3 engine ones and Trine 2, but that's developer-specific.

            Of course, the Wii has a metric fuckton of crapware, but I'm sure that makes a good percentage of all of them, steam included.

            Also, to be fair, Steam has some very old games, so the 360 number should also include playable XBOX games, the Wii should include Virtual Console and all Gamecube games and the PS3 should include whatever it is backwards compatable with these days. I can't keep track.

              You'd have to remove the one's from steam then too, so I think that's a wash or only slightly in steam's favor. Regardless though, it's still probably the largest platform.

          There were already 500 360 games in 2007, not including XBLA. The number is pretty high, but I cannot find an official count.

        This being said, I realised that I have 140 games on my steam list, it's kind of scary to think that I own just under 10% of the entire steam catalog.

        a lot of that is back-catalog that predates those consoles. a better comparison would be limited to games released in the same time period

      Steam users downloaded over 780 petaybytes from steam servers last year. According to my calculations, that is equivalent to downloading Skyrim almost 179,000,000 times. Wow.

        The fact that they are mentioning it again means it's probably going into public beta within a few weeks. They never talk about anything unless it's 'mostly' done.

        I cant wait, using Steam with m/kb on my HTPC is fine, but having a more intuitive UI for the couch would be excellent.

      40 million accounts?! Woah! Was that before or after they banned (is that the same as remove?) the Coal Farmers' accounts?

      1800 games does not really sound like much to me, in the big steam of things. The other numbers are huge though... 780 petabytes of data! That's 817,889,280 Gigabytes, or about 2,240,793GB per day!

      Mind you, that's only around 56MB per account per day, depending on how long they have had 40M accounts for, so probably around 80MB per account per day or something.
