A new year is here, so let the video games business boasts begin! Nintendo today revealed that over 4 million 3DSs have now been sold in the US, while Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword have all sold over a million.

With the holidays behind us and a new year begun, video game companies can get back to the important work of boasting about how great they are. Reporting a "great holiday season," Nintendo reveals that over 4 million Nintendo 3DS handhelds have now been bought in the US, while Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 have raced past the million sales mark to become the fastest-selling titles in their franchises' histories.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword has also now shifted over one million units--the 45th Wii game to do so, Nintendo boasts.

All in all, Nintendo sold over 12 million hardware units in the US in 2011, with the aforementioned 4 million 3DSs, 4.5 million Wiis, and 3.4 million of the various Nintendo DS models. That makes 39 million Wiis in the US, and 51 million DSs.

"One of the strongest software lineups in our history helped Nintendo have a great holiday season and to close 2011 with a full head of steam," NoA executive VP of sales & marketing Scott Moffitt said in the announcement, as a marketing man would.

"Not only have the new Mario and Zelda titles already broken records, but with strong reviews and satisfied customers sharing their positive experiences, all three are also shaping up to be the latest long-tail titles from Nintendo. Couple that with a massive first- and third party lineup in the first part of the year and the prospects for 2012 are extremely promising."

I'm in the same boat, although I'm also kinda broke, so that helps with the not buying one yet.

Still shit all for software. It's not going to last as a handheld if you don't stop fucking up on this point, Nintendo.

Their handhelds have always taken a while to get going software wise. I don't think this is going to be an exception.

I just can't justify a DS now that iphone games are decent handheld experiences. The games cost a $1 to maybe $15 at most and I can download them straight to the device and not have to deal with brick and mortar stores.

I do agree that handheld game devices need to really embrace downloadable games in a way they really haven't yet. But I don't generally consider smart phone games to be on the same caliber. Also, I need physical buttons still.

Imagine when we have nano-tech screens on our smart phones that will allow buttons and a thumbstick to seamlessly emerge from the screen, and disappear again when we dont need them.

The DS still has a pretty weak library considering the size of its install base.

Zelda, Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, StarFox

Far as I'm concerned those are the only "must haves" for the system. I think at $169.99, it's worth it. $249.99, hell no.
