Microsoft & Bungie?
by Steve Gibson, Jun 15, 2000 4:51am PDTA few people and webmasters (even a couple claiming to be MS employees) have been sending in word since last week that Microsoft was looking at buying Bungie Software (The Halo guys). This story was reported as factual in a couple of places but I couldnt get any concrete answers. Hopefully someone from MS will see this and get a yes or no. The closest I've gotten to an answer to all of this is a quote from a MS employee basically saying just 'dont believe rumors' over on PlanetXBox.
... a policy of not fueling those mills by commenting on the rumors. In general, if you haven't heard something from us, it isn't true.It sounds entirely doubtful to me, but I figured what the hell I'll throw it out there and see what comes up. If there is a grain of truth to this I'm sure it will air out today.

#67 - Agreed on the exclusivity thing. I severely doubt that MS would actively antagonize Mac loyalists for no good reason. I can see them perhaps delaying the PC release, which would be more effective anyway.
I do think it might be justifiable to delay both PC and Mac versions until after Xbox release, if it involved a nice suite of editing and server paraphernalia.
Does anyone know why Microsoft released Starlancer and Allegiance almost directly against each other? Did it have something to do with Tachyon?

The other thing that has some peoples panties in a knot - and I dont know why cause its utter horseshit - is the rumor that Halo will be an X-Box exclusive or that it will have a several months sales window available only on the x-box. Thats utter crap, imo. I could perhaps see Halo being a console title exclusive to the x-box but the rest is just silly.

I use win98 on my machine at home and it's stable as a rock. In fact at work I use win98, and my co-worker is a linux guru, and *his* machine is the one that crashes all the time.
I'm no MS junkie or supporter or whatever, but I do recognize the amount of programming prowess that MS must possess to even attempt to create mass market general OS's that for the most part work really well.
As for them buying Bungie, I think that it would be a good move, and here's why:
1) Bungie could use the money, as could any company
2) MS has games divisions, so it's not like they are totally clueless about gaming software. Motocross Madness, AoE, Flight Simulator?
3) Could you imagine how much *better* halo would be if Bungie had intimate Direct X knowledge from the programmers of the API themselves?
4) Bungie would be getting *immediate* access to the X-Box..
And here's why Microsoft *needs* to do more things like this, i.e., snap up small game publishers:
1) They need in-house titles for the X-Box. No gaming console in the past 20 years has ever survived without strong in-house content. Right now the only content I can think of that MS has in house is Motocross Madness, AoE, and Flight Simulator.
2) They have precedent to do this. Sony did this with Psygnosis and a few other companies, in order to shore up their 1st party titles.
I really believe this would be beneficial not only to MS but to Bungie as well, and in the end, us gamers..

I think your search for a Solaris client for AOL IM is going to be largely unsuccessful, as I've found that AOL, which did share it's IM web protocols for a short time, has now privatized those...
However, I did find a search engine, called google.com, which offers a fair bit of flexibility, and lent itself to quite a few hits which were ALMOST what you were looking for.. so maybe if you look a bit more on that site, you'll find somethin.
