Duke4 In 2001?

by Steve Gibson, Jun 14, 2000 5:07pm PDT

Since a few people got in a huff over the Duke4 release date being listed as Q2 of 2001 by Infrogames (the publisher) 3DRealms was contacted by AVault wondering what was up. (This was originally mentioned by baron_calamity btw) Here is a bit of what Scott Miller of 3DR had to say:

Although we do not have a release date--it is almost impossible to have accurate pre-alpha status release dates unless the developer is creating a less-than-ambitious game or is willing to cut out parts of the game to maintain the date-- <snip>
Of course if 3DR doesnt release by 2002, I'm gonna have to whip out those Quake2 engine screenshots again just to annoy them. Here are the latest shots since it always comes up.

I did a lot of work on Duke Forever's plot
line and level progression. We have it about
80% nailed down. After a few group meetings
to exchange design ideas for the levels, we'll
likely start working on "real" stuff, now that
we have direction. Allen continues to do some
amazing "tricks" with the Quake engine, that
reminds me of the early days when he and Todd
were playing with Build. "Wow, you can do
that? Wonder why nobody did?" ;) Expect
coolness. p.s. My "design doc" for Duke
Forever is like 12 pages and is overtaking
    my life ;) ;) ;)

    On Duke ForeverÂ’s Release:
    * Release: "When it's done", but it should be in 1998.

On switching from Quake II to Unreal:

We don't feel there will be a significant development delay, but there
will be a slight one as we move over to the new engine. But this is
analogous to people moving from the Quake 1 to the Quake 2 engine. Our
game data will convert right over, without a hitch.

On switching from Quake II to Unreal:

    3) Delay. Folks, DNF was likely a 1999 game in the first place. At
least early in the year. This decision is not going to cost us 6
months or more, and if it does it means we are adding cool stuff like
strippers and pool tables. The actual conversion to the Unreal engine
is nearly trivial. We have Unreal code. We have analyzed it and what
we need to do. We are not the least little bit concerned. What
concerns us is that we can make maps MUCH larger than we were and that
means more time to make them, but that's a good thing. For you.

  • Dunno, from the Duke screenshots I've seen this game will rucking fock. You guys remember that screen shot with the security guard, and the coffee maker behind him along with the coffee cup? The coffee cup had a cartoon on it. The newspaper on the desk had cartoons on it. The radio on his belt had knobs and buttons on it. You could see the creases in his shirt. The state flags over the doorway had creases in them. Shit, even the leather chair in front of the coffee maker had creases in them. The level of detail in that one screenshot alone spoke of insane levels of detail.

3DR is adding more realism into the game than I think any of us have previously EVER seen. I think Duke4 will up the bar on the FPS genre, much like Half-life did. I expect a storyline, interactivity with the characters (the General screenshot...) And I expect a whole lot more.

This game will flat out kick ass whenever it's released. And if 3DR needs alittle extra time to polish up right, even if it is 2001 Q2, I say let them have it.

This will also be my last post for at least a month and a half. Being active duty military has it's pitfalls, and being deprived access to the Shack for periods of time is one of them. You guys keep the faith!
