by Garnett Lee, Dec 23, 2011 11:00am PSTJoin us as for our Weekend Confirmed holiday special as we head into this long weekend. Insomniac's James Stevenson and game developer Ariel Angelotti join Xav, Jeff, and Garnett for the festivities. Many of you shared stories of your videogame memories from the season which we enjoy retelling with you throughout the show. We also get to talk about some of the games we've been playing like Alan Wake American Nightmare and Star Wars the Old Republic. There's even a little news as we check in on the release of the PlayStation Vita in Japan and the big Steam sale's contest that will see one lucky gamer win the entire catalog on the service. We even remember to get in finishing moves and our end of the season football tailgate.

I realize the following is full of broad generalization (no pun intended) but go with me for a second. If we concede that western civilization grew out of hunter/gatherers that were basically split down gender lines, then one could look at modern video games as a throwback - or modern fulfillment - of those basic roles. That is, men and boys are generally drawn to simulations that allow them to "hunt" (any given shooter or RPG) and women are generally (again, generally) drawn to the types of games that allow them to gather (The Sims, FarmVille).
I wonder how the audience here feels about mechanics in video games as an extension of gender roles rather than simply characters.

The fact is that, be it through nature, nurture or whatever (I'd rather not get into it) men and women gravitate to different things. I know we'd like to pretend that women like action games as much as men like the Sims but it's just not true.
I work in retail. The place I work at sells a lot of magazines. Men buy a lot of magazines about motorbikes, fitness, sports, hunting etc where as women buy more magazines about fashion, gossip, travel, home-making, weddings and so on.
Let's stop being politically correct. People are too afraid to highlight the differences between men and women. But those differences make us diverse and interesting. People feel the weight of sexism if they say things like 'action films are more appealing to men' but what if it's true?
My personal opinion is that there could be a lot more diversity in games that could appeal more to women and things women enjoy more. I'm not saying there should be ironing sims or anything like that but we have to realize that while some women enjoy shooting at aliens, most action games are a fulfillment of testosterone style fantasies. In most action games you are strong, large, powerful, intelligent, rich and handsome. Guys grow up wanting to be Indiana Jones or Batman. Most women I know don't have the same kind of fantasies. Most women I know grew up wanting to be the Little Mermaid. They want to be graceful, beautiful, admired, independent and nurturing.
I think I'll stop before I go on and on...
Anyway Jeff, I thought you spoke well and honestly.
