PlanetSide 2 beta applications now open

Sony Online Entertainment has updated the PlanetSide 2 site, complete with a beta application.

Sony has given the PlanetSide 2 site a facelift, and included sign-ups for beta access in the process. If you already have a Sony Online Entertainment Station account, that can serve as a shortcut to a process that's pretty painless on the whole.

The beta application can be found prominently on the right side of the site (via Massively), and doesn't require you to fill out a beta questionnaire. The spruced-up site even includes a little holiday thank-you from the team.

SOE's John Smedley recently confirmed that the game would be free-to-play, hinting that the team likes League of Legends. The game still has no firm release date, but it's expected early next year. Smedley only committed to "when it's ready and we are proud of it," but an impending beta is a good sign.

PlanetSide Universe noted some interesting things on the new site:

Battles can last for days or weeks, so players will need to build alliances and specialized combat outfits to take on long-term strategic and tactical initiatives. With air, ground and seaborne combat, the battles will be larger and more intense than ever.

VEHICLES: More than 20 vehicles with two unique vehicles per empire. Players will be able to customize each vehicle, unlocking new skills and features

It also seems like vets might have priority into the beta, so use the same Station account!

The website no longer mentions seaborne combat and says 10 instead of 20 vehicles. Maybe those were supposed to be announced later.

I lost my old Station ID ( (the one I played the original Planetside with) and password... and it's associated with an old email address which has been closed down. Kind of out of luck with that one I guess. Too bad because it says original Planetside players get some kind of extra privileges.

Just noticed this screenshot on the PSU site which shows one of my favorite things about the original.

Fucking huge orbital strikes! Wire1 was in my platoon at one point, and I recognize a lot of those names on there. My record was 26 kills shortly after BFR's came out. I had the screenshot of it but lost it in a HD crash. :(
